  • Notes
    • From: "Henry Powell"
Subject: Edward Powell of Halifax Co., VA 1704?-1773
      Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 08:39:03 -0400

It is gratifying to see the renewed interest in my 5th great grandfather. I can prove the lineage and have wills for him and each descendant up to myself (no will needed, yet).
That's the good news. The rest of the story is not so good. Edward has a murky ancestry. Lots of folks have tried to link him with various lines but none of these links seem to stick.

Let's review what we know. Our Edward can be firmly placed in (now) Halifax County, Virginia in 1746 with a land entry record of 200 acres. The site is somewhere along the Banister River near Wynn's Creek. He later added adjoining land in various increments and had some 2000 acres within ten years. He obvious has a source of money with which to acquire these holdings. Edward was obviously within Bristol Parish from about 1727 onward as some of his children are listed in the Bristol Parish Register, beginning with Thomas in 1727 (who died young). Edward's wife was Elizabeth. We don't know the surname. Some eager Latter Day Saint made an entry in the IGI or Ancestral File that there was a marriage between Edward and Elizabeth Ransom in the Bristol Parish Register. I can't find it after having read the entire book twice. Ergo the marriage is still a moot point. The rest of the children are well documented (ask me if you don't know them).

Also in the neighborhood at about the same time was William Powell who had land on the Banister River and on the North Branch of Difficult Run. I found his house, a few hundred yards from Difficult Run (only a little trickle). It stands (or did a few years ago), derelict, with a lovely collection of rustic colonial farm outbuildings. It probably dates from around 1750 - a guess based on the chimney design. I would guess further that William and Edward were either brothers or cousins. Take you choice. Edward named his second son William (b. ca. 1729). I wonder about the source for the names of Edward's other sons, David, Luke and Mark. Edward was a good Anglican and often let services be held in his house. He probably wasn't literate (signed deeds with a crude E) but he obviously could count money very well as his fortune carried the family until after the Civil War (it fizzled about 1895).

Further in the neighborhood were John Powell and Richard Powell, also on Difficult Run. By 1754, David Powell (Edward's son and my 4th great grandfather) had 400 acres in the area (this would mark his reaching age 21). In 1762, Joshua Powell had land on Sandy Creek. I think Joshua is a child of Hezekiah Powell. This opens another whole can of worms here. Hezekiah was the son of John and Mical Powell of Lancaster County who are listed in the Upper Farnham Parish Register (now housed in the Virginia library). Mical was the daughter of Hezekiah Turner who lived just south of the original site of Farnham Church on the NORTH side of the Rappahannock River. I found a couple of old homesites that could possibly be one belonging to Turner. Old homesites tend to endure if they are well sited. You can spot them by the trees around them and the outbuildings.
Also living in Lancaster County was a Thomas Powell, possibly related to a Howell Powell and maybe a Walter Powell. He lived on Deep Creek, which is still clearly marked on the Lancaster County map. The Parish record indicates that he had a son, Thomas Jr. but I don't known anything further about this line just now. That's my next objective.

Way up the Rappahannock River, on the SOUTH side, about 50 miles away, there was a Parish and a Church named Sittingborne. The only obvious connection between Sittinbourne and Farnham is that they are both in Virginia. In this bucolic setting lived a Thomas Powell who married a Mary Place. They had a son, Thomas Jr. who moved just up the road and married a girl named Mary. Thomas Jr had several sons, including a John, Richard, Edward and so on. He died in 1739 and Mary took up with a country lawyer by the name of Ware. Ware ended up with the farm and Mary's children seemed confused about whether they were Powells or Wares. So are we. Just to further confuse the issue, Richard died in (I think) Amherst County and left land to his brothers, including 200 acres to Edward (who later called himself Edward Ware ...). I'll try to ignore that piece of information. It's a big red herring.

Tentative conclusion: Thomas Powell of Sittingbourne and John Powell of Farnham were probably not related, and perhaps not even aware of each other. I think the answers to our questions lie in the Farnham Parish line. The old colonial town of Tappahannock lies on the south side of the Rappahannock River, the terminus of the ferry across from the north side of the river. Virginia Route 360 begins in Tappahannock, winds through Richmond and Amelia and goes straight to the Banister River and on through Halifax County. It's a pretty (but long) drive now but must have been horrible by horseback and/or oxcart. But, that is probably the way that our Halifax County Powells got to their new home.

OK, you guys. Have at it. All we need is solid evidence (Hah). As much as I would like the convenience of tying in with Thomas/Mary Place, it seems less and less likely. But the alternative is that the Farnham line ties in with the Welsh line from Breconshire. I have resisted the inclination to post the Castle Madoc Powell family records, unearthed in Brecon in 1996. It's too tempting to make links that aren't really there ... yet.

      Happy researching.
      Henry Powell
    • Lancaster Co was formed in 1651 from Northumberland and York counties. There was probably one parish, Lancaster Parish. By a county court order Lancaster Co was divided into two parishes in 1654, Upper and Lower Parish, but the
name of Farnham Parish was in a few years given to the Upper Parish. Farnham became the frontier parish and had an indefinite extension westward. In 1656 Rappahannock Co was formed and the county lines were laid in conformity with the parish lines of Farnham Parish. In 1661, Sittingbourne Parish was created out of Farnham Parish so there became two Parishes in Rappahannock Co, each lying on both sides of the Rappahannock River. Sittenburne Parish was the western or frontier parish. In 1677, Sittenburne Parish was divided and St. Mary's Parish was formed from western part, and became the frontier parish. In 1683 Farnham Parish was divided into North Farnham and South Farnham, the river being the dividing line between the two parishes. In 1692 Rappahannock Co disappeared, when Essex and Richmond ounties were created from it. Rappahannock River was the dividing line, Richmond on the north side and Essex south of the river. Both of these counties had the same parishes, Farnham, Sittenburne and St. Mary's.

It now gets even more confusing, but to sum up the rest of the divisions etc. suffice to say that in 1714 the northern half of St. Mary's Parish in Richmond Co, was set up as Hanover Parish, and the reduced parish of St. Mary's lying south of the Rappahannock, was wholly included in Caroline Co after 1727. SO, you could have started out in Northumberland Co. and perhaps without moving ended up in Essex, Hanover, Caroline, Richmond etc. All of these Powells in all of these areas could easily have been from the same family. Parish information comes from "Parish Lines Diocese of Virginia" by Charles Francis Cocke.
