May Elkins Jester, age 85 of Bloomington died at her son's residence in Bloomington, Indiana on July 5, 2013, after suffering a stroke at home.
May was born on March 30, 1928 in Charlottesville, Virginia to Bruce D. and Katharine Grason Reynolds. She attended Lane High School in Charlottesville and Mary Washington College of The University of Virginia. On June 15, 1946 she married James P. Elkins who preceded her in death on August 18, 2000. She then married Wayne E. Jester who preceded her in death on January 17, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her brother and sister, Bruce D. Reynolds and Katharine Reynolds Stark.
May was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter) and Mensa. She was a Camp Fire leader and served on the Five Hundred Festival Committee. She was also a member of the Southside Medical Auxiliary, serving as president in 1958. Last but not least, she was an enthusiastic member of the Hot Flash Poker Club.
May will be greatly missed. She never unduly interfered with her children's lives but was always there for support when it was needed. She had a keen intellect, a great sense of humor and a gregarious love of life. Open-minded and empathetic, she genuinely espoused the "live and let live" philosophy. She adored her pets, loved to drive and enjoyed a good bourbon and coke.
May is survived by her children, Patricia Dye of Lafayette, IN, Paulette Walters of Morrisville, NC and James Elkins (wife Diana) of Bloomington, IN; her stepchildren, Cheryl McDivitt and Gary Jester; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
May will be interred in the University of Virginia Cemetery at Charlottesville where a family graveside service is planned for October 14, 2013. May had a soft spot for stray animals, so please make any memorial donations to your favorite animal shelter.
