    • My great-grandfather, Patrick Paul Ryan, husband of Minerva, is the path to follow in regard to her mother, Elvira B. Boley, who is on the 1860 Census of Halifax Co., Va. as follows:

Schedule I. - Free Inhabitants in the Southern District in the County of Halifax of Virginia enumerated by me, on the 18th day of July 1860. Post Office: Halifax C. H.
773 755 Value of Real Estate Value of Personal Property

      C. B. Edwards 16 M
      A. L. Edwards 20 M
      Arabella Edwards 12 F
      Monty B. Edwards 10 M

Elvira Boley Edwards husband, James M. Edwards, Sr., died April 1870, and she then moved in with her daughter, Minerva Anne, in the household of Minerva?s husband, Paterick (sic Patrick) Ryan, shown on the 1870 Census as follows:

1870 United States Census, Port Deposit, Cecil County, Maryland, enumerated on the 2nd day of July 1870. J. Dixon West, Ass?t Marshal.
      Page 4
Ryan, Paterick, 38 M W Stone Cutter; Value of Personal Estate - 100; born in Ireland; Father and Mother of foreign birth; male citizen of the U. S.
Ryan, Ann 36, Keep house, born in Virginia
Ryan, Philip 14, Attends school, born in Virginia
Ryan, Mary 12, at home, born in Virginia
Ryan, William 10, at home, born in Virginia (my grandfather: William Thomas Ryan m. Minerva Anne Edwards)
Ryan, Virginia 8, born in Virginia
Ryan, Patrick 5, born in Virginia
Edwards, Elvira 63, none; Value of Personal Estate: 150, born in Virginia, widow.

By 1880 the Ryan family had moved from Maryland to Richmond, Virginia. I do not have the exact year but did find them on the 1880 Census.
The 1880 Census of Patrick & Minerva Ryan, and family of 10 children, enumerated on the first day of June, 1880, does not include Elvira Edwards. I have done many searches in Cecil County, Maryland as well as Richmond, Va. in an attempt to find the burial place of Elvira but, to this day, have yet to find any further information in her regard. But, at least, you now know that she lived many years beyond what is shown on the file you provided i.e. ?died before 1860."

There are other errors in the ?Reynolds? site that you sent to Cousin Bill Talley, and I will provide you with them, when I am able. Hope this, at least, gives you some help in your search.

p.s. I have come across quite a few Egglestons in Amelia Co., Va., where my many connections resided in the early years: Farley, Ellington, Baldwin, Tucker, etc.

Descendants of Benjamin R Boley, Sr.

      Generation No. 1

      1. BENJAMIN R1 BOLEY SR. He married PATIENCE W DANIEL November 15, 1798 in Charlotte County, Virginia.

      Notes for BENJAMIN BOLEY:

1810 census shows Benjamin Boley as having 1 boy over 10, 2 boys under 10 and 1 girl under 10.

1830 Census Bedford County - Lists Presley Bowley, a Betsy Boley with two small girls, and a name I can not make out. It looks like a Gr??? or Gorea B Bowley. There are five males and one female in this household. The male ages are: one 40 to 50, two 30 to 40, and two under 5. The female is age 20 to 30.

Analysis of the 1810 and 1830 census along with other documentation (Presley Boleys pension application, DAR applications, family bibles for John Boley and Elvira Boley Edwards, etc.) I believe the children of Benjamin R Boley, Sr. are: Parham A. Boley [or Asa P. Boley] that married Elizabeth Feare [Fair] in 1822; Lafayette Boley; Elvira Boley who married James Edwards in 1829 [Parham Boley was a witness at the wedding of Elvira Boley; and, Pleasant Boley that married Gabrilla Crank in 1834.

Since Pleasant M Boley didn't marry until 1834, he could be one of the two listed on the 1830 census as being between 30 - 40. Parham A Boley married a Elizabeth Feare in 1824. He migrated to Caswell County NC, I believe, about 1830 only because he was bondsman to Elvira B Boley marriage in 1829. I believe the Betsy Boley that appears on this census to be his wife Elizabeth Fear (Fair). In 1850 Parham Boley is listed on the Caswell census as age 50, with his daughter Amanda Simpson and Esther D Fair. In 1854 he married Esther. If I am right about the time he migrated to NC, he could not have been one of the other Boley males listed in this Gr??? B Boley household in 1830.

Children of BENJAMIN BOLEY and PATIENCE DANIEL are:
      1.1. PARHAM ASA2 BOLEY, b. November 23, 1800.
      1.2. PLEASANT M BOLEY, b. May 20, 1805.
      1.3. LAFAYETTE BOLEY, b. October 01, 1803.
      1.4. ELVIRA F BOLEY, b. October 07, 1807.
Comments: Elvira B. Boley is on the 1860 Census of Halifax County, Va. The enumerator mistakenly shows her age a 32 whereas she was 52. She is also shown on the Cecil Co., Md. Census for 1870 where she lived with her son-in-law, Patrick Paul Ryan, and her daughter, Minerva Anne, and their children.
She no longer appears with the "Ryan" family in the 1880 Census, where the family had moved prior to 1880, and are enumerated living in Richmond, Va. Best guess is that she died while they were living in Md. but searches have been made of the cemeteries located in the Cecil Co., Md. area and no records have been found. (Raymond W. Ryan, 2nd great-grandson of Elvira Boley Edwards)

Comments: James M. Edwards, Sr. was born July 15, 1799, Halifax Co., Va., and died April 1870, Halifax Co., Va. His marriage was not on January 3, 1829, as that was the Marriage Bond Date in Caswell Co., N.C. Instead, as noticed earlier his marriage took place on January 15, 1829, and was performed by Danl A. Pennick, Minister of the Gospel. (James M. Edwards, Sr. is my 2nd great-grandfather.)

      Mary Frances,
I was going through our ancestors' list on your site and noticed that Martha Elvira Edwards [nee Boley] had not been updated to reflect her death is unknown (some years back someone posted on "ancestry.com" that she had died in Halifax county, 1870) and that is what you show.
She was 63 (Cecil County, MD 1870 Census) copied and pasted below, and either died in Cecil County about 1876 (my opinion), or Richmond, Va., although I doubt the latter since my greatgrandfather, Patrick Paul Ryan, would have certainly had with family records (?).
My great aunt Bessie was born in 1877 is how I came up with the 1876 best guess!
      Hoping you are well,
      Ray

    6. [S10] R.W. Ryan.
Thanks to Raymond W. Ryan, Jr.
Marriage Bond Date; they were married on January 15, 1829. In closing, I am available, if needed, for any further questions in regard to OUR ncestors & kin!

Possibly the 1870 Halifax County Census was taken on or before April 1870, the month and year that James Edwards died, because after that date widow Elvira Boley Edwards had moved in with her daughter and son-in-law as shown on the 1870 Census of Cecil County, Md. 'age 63 widow.'
Not unusual as my gggrandmother, Elizabeth Coghill
Liggan (widow of Robert) is shown with her children on both the 1850 censuses of New Kent County and Henrico County.

      Kind regards,
      Raymond W. Ryan, Jr.
