      Eleanor Sidney RIGNEY
      Sex: F
      AKA: Ellen
Birth: JUN 1844, Briar Mntn Pittsylvania CO, VA
Death: 1904 in Briar Mountian Pittsylvania CO, VA Note: Eleanor Sidney Rigney was my GGreat-grandmother too! My great grandfather was Robert's brother James Hunter Rigney. I have some family letters also. They are from F.B. Clement, Benjamin F. Clement's son by his second "marriage". He was an attorney in Nashville, Arkansas. The letters are dated 1949-1950 and sent to Mrs. G.C. Powell (Estelle Rigney). She is the daughter of Robert and James brother, Albert. On the second page of one of his letters it says "he did the Rigney children an injustice and a wrong in abandoning them without support. What are their feelings toward him?" I am missing the 1st page to that one, but I have 3 others complete. Ellen and Benjamin never got married, but had 13 children. Ellen married Levi Monroe Jackson October 4, 1894 and the last 4 of her children took his name.
      Ellen and Ben's children:
      William Johnson Rigney, b. March 8, 1863
      Benjamin Lee Rigney, b. March 14, 1866
Albert Sidney Rigney, July 13, 1867
      Mary Ellen Rigney, b. April 9, 1868
Samuel Harris Rigney, b. abt 1870
      Horis [Harris]G. Rigney, b. abt 1872
      Robert Morris Rigney, b. abt1873
      Ida Belle Rigney, b. June 15, 1875
      James Hunter Rigney, b. Dec 13, 1878
Madison Monroe Rigney, b. August 1879
      Minnie G. Rigney, b. July 1882
      Lula M. Rigney, b. Jan 1884
      Anne Rigney, b. May 1885

I also have a letter to Mr. James R. Huntsman of Stillwater, Minn. dated 1978, from Madalene Vaden Fitzgerald. She is doing some family research for him. I don't know who he is. She had a note given to her by Mrs. Maude Carter Clement, Historian, and wife of the late Senator Nathaniel E. Clement. It told her about how 3 of Benjamin Clement's brothers were killed in a feud. There isn't much else in it except she said she would look for marriage record for Ellen and Benjamin. Ellen is probably daughter to Sally 'Lolly' Adkins that married Owen Rigney. She then took on the Rigney name. I haven't had time to search the Adkins link. Maybe someone out there can give you and I some help with the connection. Hope this helps.

      My Ellen? is as follows:
Eleanor Sidney (Ellen) Rigney; b. abt 1844, d. about 1904.
      Mother: Sarah (Sallie) Adkins
      Father: Owen Rigney
Ellen had 11 children by Benjamin Turner Clemet, but never married him. She named all of her children Rigney. I have my Grandmother's marriage certificate and it gives no name for her father. I believe that all the birth certificates do not have a father's name. She married Levi Monroe Jackson 10/4/1894. Her children are as follows:
      William Johnson Rigney; b. 3/8/1863, d. 6/17/1932.
      Benjamin Lee Rigney; b. 3/14/1866, d. 6/8/1956.
      Albert Sidney Rigney; b. 7/13/1867, d. 12/23/1949.
      Mary Ellen (Molly) Rigney; b. 4/9/1868, d. 7/25/1864
Samuel Harris Rigney; b. abt. 1871, d. unknown

Eleanor Sidney "Ellen" Rigney was born in 1844 and died in 1904. She is my great-great grandmother. Her son, Harry Richard "Whale" Rigney, was my great grandfather. I have two different photos of her. Ellen's parents were Owen Rigney and Sally Adkins Rigney. Ellen was born and lived in the Briar Mountain section of Pittsylvania County all of her life. Nine of her children were by Benjamin Turner Clement. She later married Levi Monroe Jackson. There were five children by this marriage. Here tombstone reads "Ellen J. Rigney Born 1844 Died 1904.

      Hi,
Interesting, from my notes, My great grandfather Willis Griffin Rigney was married to 1st wife, Elizabeth Hedricks in Pittsylivana County, VA.
Her parents were John Hedricks and Susan Midkiff. I noticed "Midkiff" so I recalled that a Rebecca Rigney, daugther of Jonathan Rigney SR or JR married Spencer Midkiff. Do you have any info about Rigney/Hedricks/Midkiff families ? I hope that this will lead to the parentage of John Rigney (m. Anna Adkins) John Rigney was grandfather of Willis Griffin Rigney thru his son, William(m. Mary " Polly" Gibson)
      Thanks,

According to her entry in the 1900 census, Ellen had 13 children; the first nine went by Rigney and the last four by Jackson. Ellen married Levi Monroe Jackson in 1894 and in the 1900 census, the last four children (Mattison, b. 1879 or 1880, Minnie G., b. Jul 1882, Lula M., b. Jan 1884, and Anne, b. May 1885) were listed as Levi Monroe Jackson's STEP children. Descendants of the children who went by Rigney insist that she had a long-term relationship with Benjamin Turner Clement who later in life moved to Nashville, Arkansas, where he married and had one son. However, he frequently returned to Pittsylvania county to visit his sister who lived near Ellen Rigney. Although Ellen went by Rigney, in the 1850 census she is listed in the household of Owen Rigney, wife Sally Rigney, son John Rigney, l year old. Also in the household were Ellen ADKINS, age 9, and Susanna ADKINS, age 7 -- suggesting that these two girls were the children of Sally, but NOT Owen. When Ellen married in 1894 her mother was given as Sallie Rigney; no father was listed.

Madison M. who went by Jackson married Lousetta Wells in 1910. They lived in Mountain Valley, Henry Co. In the 1850 census Owen Rigney's household showed Sally and a 9-year-old girl names Ellen Adkins. I'm beginning to think that this Ellen is the one who became Ellen Rigney. She may have been a daughter or a sister of the Sally Lolley Adkins who married Owen Rigby.
      Again, my thanks.
