      Adele Dillard Pannill Carter, 88, of 15
      Scuffle Hill, died Feb. 17, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry
      County. She was born on June 7, 1911, in Mayodan, N.C., to the late William
      Letcher Pannill and Adele Dillard Pannill. She graduated from Martinsville High
      School and attended Salem College. In addition to her parents, she was preceded
      in death by her husband, Joseph Coates Carter Sr., and their sons, Joseph Coates
      Carter Jr. and William Letcher Pannill Carter, and her siblings, Mary Lou Lacy
      and Pattie Mebane. She is survived by five daughters, Lucy Wilson of
      Martinsville, Coates Clark of Stuart, Jane Vaughan of Lynchburg, Dillard Sanders
      of Kauai, Hawaii, and Susie Carter of Greensboro, N.C. Also surviving are two
      daughter-in-laws, Judy Carter and Melinda Penn of Martinsville, and three
      sons-in-law, A.C. Wilson of Martinsville, William B. Clark Jr. of Stuart, and
      David A. Vaughan of Lynchburg . Mrs. Carter had twelve grandchildren, Virginia
      and Babe Carter, Will and Coates Carter, Adele Mattox Pigg, Sam Mattox, Blair
      and Anna Clark, Rawley and Carter Vaughan, Buck and Joe Blocker, and two
      great-granddaughters, Bracken and Caitlin Carter. She is also survived by her
      sisters, Lucy Sale of Wilmington, N.C., Yonnie Smith and Carolyn Franck of
      Martinsville , and Bill Pannill of Palm Beach, Fla. Mrs. Carter was formerly
      active in the American Red Cross and The Charity League, and was an honorary
      member of the Martinsville Garden Club, a past board member of the Adult Day
      Care, a former member of First United Methodist Church and the Wesley Guild and
      current member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church.
