Mr. Pannill was born on a farm near Wentworth, N.C., on Oct. 21, 1880, the son of Lucy Dillard and John T. Pannill. He received his education in the public schools of Reidsville, Oak Ridge Military Academy, at Oak Ridge, N.C., and from Bryan-Stratton Business College in Baltimore, of which he was a graduate.
Mr. Pannill entered the textile industry with the Mayo Cotton Mills at Mayodan, N.C., in 1904 and rose in that field until, at the time of his death, he was considered one of the sections' leading textile manufacturers.
Mr. Pannill stayed at Mayodan from 1904 to 1916 during which time he became superintendent of the Mayo Mills and also the first mayor of the town of Mayodan.
In 1916, he joined the P. H. Hans Knitting Company that was then being organized in Winston-Salem, and remained with that firm until 1923 when he moved to Reidsville to organize the Cartex Company.
He remained with Cartex for two years and then came to Martinsville in 1925, to found the Pannill Knitting Company, the first unit of four textile manufacturing enterprises.
Three years later, with S. S. Walker and other associates he founded the Virginia Underwear Corporation, then in 1933 formed the Pannill-Walker Underwear Company, followed in 1937 by the organization of the Sale Knitting Company.
He was a member of the Anderson Memorial Presbyterian Church and had served on the board of deacons of the church.
He had also served as president of the Kiwanis Club.
He was very active in the real estate business.
