      Book 10 Page 265
      Recorded August Court 1777
Dated 10 Feb. 1777 - Anthony Gholson of Louisa Co. purchased of John Williamson of Halifax Co. for 125 pounds, 225 acres "lying and being in the County of Halifax aforesaid and on the South side of Dan on the lower side of Deep Bottom creek...Down new Road" - Bounded by John Dickies, William Wiley and John Raney, Joseph Talbert, Elizabeth Miller - land formerly owned by Jacob Miller - Witnesses: James Coleman, Joseph Talbert, Thomas B??, John Gholson

      Book 14 page 485
Dated 3 Jan. 1789 - Dabney Goalson sold to John Goalson - 100 acres for 100 pounds - land described as "being upper part of the land given to me by my fathers last will...beginning on Charles Powell line" - Bounded by John Dickie, Charles Powell, James Watkins - Witnesses: Charles Powell, Thomas Hix, Arch Commical
Note: This record describing the land received from Anthony Gholson as beginning at Charles Powell line proves Charles' land was adjacent to his father's-in-law land on the South side of the Dan. There were many other Powells in the land records (William, Luke, David, Mark, John, Joshua, and another Charles) but the land was mostly in Northern Halifax Co. on and near the Bannister River. I have not connected any of these other Powells with our Charles, but it is possible there is a connection.

Birth: Bet 1707 and 1708 in Spotsylvania Co., VA.
Death: 1779 in Halifax Co. VA.
      Note:

Halifax Co. Land Records Book 10 page 265 Dated 10 Feb 1777 Anthony Gholson of Louisa Co. purchased of John Williamson of Halifax Co. for 125 pounds 225 acres "lying and being on the South Side of Dan on the lower side of Deep Bottom creek...Down new Road" bound by John Dickies, William Wiley and Joyn Raney, Joseph Talbert, Elizabeth Miller- "its being a tract of land bequeathed to Jacob Miller by the last will and testament of Harmen Miller Dec. and conveyed by deed from the said Jacob Miller to John Williamson"

Book 14 page 485 dated 3 Jan 1789 - Dabney Goalson sold to John Goalson 100 acres for 100 pounds land described as "being upper part of the land given to me by my fathers last will...beginning on Charles Powell line" bound by John Dickie, Charles Powell, James Watkins - Witnesses Charles Powell, Thomas Hix, Arch Commical . This proves that Charles Powells land bordered Anthony Gholson's land and was also on the South Side of the Dan.

Anthony Gholson, Jr. was probably born and raised in Spotsylvania County, VA and married Mary Sandridge, daughter of William and Ann Sandridge , by 1743. He & Mary lived close by her parents on land he purchased from William Sandridge from 1744 until 1764, when he probably moved to Lousia County. In 1777 he migrated to Halifax County, V A and it seems most of his married children migrated with him. Anthony Jr. died in 1779. Mary Gholson married John Brown Aug. 8, 1788, Halifax Co. VA and died after 1798. The known children of Anthony Jr. & Mary are as follows.

      1. ANTHONY1 GHOLSON , SR. was born Abt. 1670 in of, Spotsylvania Co., Virginia, and died Abt. 1763 in St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., Virginia. He married JANE.

Notes for ANTHONY GHOLSON , SR.:
Anthony Gholson, Sr. and his wife Jane

Anthony Gholson, Sr. (name spelled Gholson, gholston, Gholstone, Gholson, Gholdstone, Golston, ect) was probably born in Virginia. The first definite record of him is found in Spotsylvania County, Virginia on July 5, 1725, when he purchased two hundred acres of land on the south side of hollodays Swamp in Saint George's parish in Spotsylvania County from James Taylor of Drysdale Parish in King and Queen County, Virginia. Anthony Gholson was probably from Old Rappahannock County which later became Essex County, from which Spotsylvania County was formed. The author definitely believes that he was born in Virginia, probably between 1670-1680, and that he was descended from a line of Golston's (Goulston,Golston, Gulston) that were in Virginia at a very early date, and were very probably of the same lineage as Dr. Theodore Goulston(Gulston, Golston) of the London Company.
Anthony Gholson( Gholston) was granted 1,000 acres of land on Terry's run in Spotsylvania County on September 28,1728 from King George the Second, and at the time his two sons, Anthony ,Jr. and William were granted another 1,000 acres jointly. On Sept. 27,1734 he transferred 4421/2 acres of the 1,000 acre grant on Terry's Run to William Gaines of King and Queen County, and on September 28, 1734 he transferred another 4421/2 acres to James Jones of Caroline County. Then on April 24,1738 he transferred the remaining 115 acres of this 1,000 acre tract to William Croswaithe of Orange County.
Anthony Gholson, Sr. signed his documents that are recorded to which he was a party with a large A, indicating that he was raised without the opportunity of education, which lends evidence to his possible birth and early life in Virginia rather than in England. The first record of Anthony Gholson(Gholstone) with his wife, Jane was on February 22, 1739,when he transferred to Zachary Lewis the tow hundred acres he purchased from James Taylor,in 1725. The next year, on July 1,1740, he purchased 400 acres from John and Margaret Chew, and he sold 120 acres of this property on October 2, 1744, to WilliamPollard. He sold the remaining 280 acres of this land on April 4, 1744, shortley before his decease , to Joseph Hawkins, Jr. William Pollard was his son-in law-and it is wondered if there might not be a relationship also to Joseph Hawkins, Jr. (and some have thought that he might have been related through Jane, the wife of Anthony Gholson, Sr.)
Anthony Gholson, Sr. Deeded his personal property to his wife and children in deeds of gift, which are recorded in Orange County, Virginia, one on July 23, 1763 and another on August 8,1763. He also deeded to his son, John, the lot of land on which he resided, which he had purchased from Nathaniel Geer of Orange County. He names three sons, William, Anthony, and John and two daughters,Elizabeth and Lucy, in these deeds and also mentions a granddaughter, Jane Pollard. Anthony ghoslon, Sr. died before December 3, 1764, when his widow, Jane gholson, made a deed of gift of all that she possessed, to her son John, which he was to enjoy durning her lifetime ( the lifetime of Jane Gholson, his mother), and after her death to be divided as directed in the deeds from her deceased husband. In the deed she calls John Gholson, "my son" and she callls the other children named in her husband's deeds of gift as the "rest of my children". Some have thought that Jane may have been a second wife of anthony, Sr. and possibly not the mother of his children, but this would indicate that they were her own children. There was a Jane Gholson whose inventory was made on February 28,1797 in Spotsylvania County. Though this could have been the widow of anthony Gholson, Sr. it does not seem likely, since she had property in Orange County, on which she was to live durning her lifetime according to the deed og gift to her son John. This Jane Gholson, whose inventary was made in 1797,was more likely the second wife of William Gholson, Sr. he lived in SpotsylvaniaCounty, and was married the second time to Joan (probably Perry) Jane and Joan being interchangable frequently in earlier times.
The Children of Anthony Gholson, Sr. and Jane his wife
      1. William Gholson, Sr. born in Virginia probably before 1707 ( if 21 in 1728 at the time of his land grant) married 1. Susanna Collins 2. Joan? (perry)

      2. Anthony Gholson, Jr. born in Virginia probably before 1707 married Mary Sandridge

      3. Elizabeth Gholson, born in virginia, married 1. William Pollard 2. Samuel Rice

      4. Lucy Gholson, born in Virginia, married Mr. Stapp (probably James Stapp

      5. John Gholson born in Virginia married Esther Cooke

from the Book: Golsan, Golson, Gholson, Gholston Families in America by James M. Black

The early records indicate his residence in St. George Parish, Spotsylvania wheras the later ones state St. Thomas Parish,Orange County Virginia. Orange County was formed from Spotyslvania County in 1734.
the deed of gift found in Will book 13 page 322, Orange County. recorded 1763 July 23rd leaves two slaves (Tom and little Tom) with furniture ect to son William and two slaves Bob and boy, Cipid with furniture to son Anthony, while to daughters, to Elizabeth Ricer, the slaves Venus and Mary; the wife of Samuel Rice; formerly the wife of William Pollard whose will was dated July 13,1746 and proved July 24th in whidh he bequeaths 250 acres to :friend" Joseph Hawkins ( one wonders why) and to his own eldest son, Joseph Pollard, :land purchased of Anthony Gholson", mentioning also his younger son William, his daughter Sarah Pollard, and his unborn child.( Jane)and to Lucy Step ( or Stap) he left the life interestonly, in two slaves, Phillis and Creece. I tis resumed that Lucy's husband was James, the son of Joshua and wife Hannah and that the Gholson Stapp of Garrard Co, kentucky will 1802/04 was Lucy (nee Gholson) son.
Mrs. Jane Gholson, widow of Anthony, deeded the property left to her by her husband Anthony Gholson, Sr. to her son John the transaction being recorded in Dec. 3,1764 in Orange County records, probably because she was living with this son and maybe the other children objected to his having the benefit of the use of the slaves. She outlived all her children apparently for the record of inventory of her estate by her administrator, John Greenhorn, in Spotsylvania Will Book E page 639 on Feb. 28th, 1797 reports cash in his hands at the time of her death, her care and board expenses as well as the wintering of her cattle eight and a half months, indicates her date of passing to have been durning the summer of 1796. To be reembursed he was given the permission to sell the sheep, cattle, spinning sheel, flax wheel, side saddle, pewter, urns, chest, and other furniture belonging to her.
In estimating the probable ages of Anthony and his children, it is likely the elsest child was William and both he and his brother anthony were of age in 1728 to secure grants of land, their minimum birth dates would range not likely later than 1705-06 and 1707-08, and estimating their fatherAnthony Gholson, Sr was 21 years old in 1705 ( he may have only been 18), his probable birthdate would lie between 1684-87. If the later date, he would have been 77 in 1763-64. If his wife, Jane was aged 16 when he married (17 when William was born, in 1705 or 1706, her probable bithdate would be 1688. She lived to a ripe old age by 1796, not improbable, but quite unusual in any era. The first documentary record we have of Jane as the wife of Anthony Sr. was in 1734, There is a possiblilty that jane was his second wife.

      Taliferro Connection

Robert Taliferro, Gentleman of Old Rappanhancock and Gloucester County (born 1633 and died 1700 ) and his brother John were the two brothers of Jean. Jean married in 1703 in Scotland john Craig(born 1650 died in Scotland 1705) . shortly after her husband's death Jean joined her brothers in Virginia and gave biorth there -posthumously-to her son whom she named Talliferro (Tolivar) Craig
note : It is possible that this Jean Taliferro Craig may have married Anthony Gholson, Sr. and was his second wife being the mother of John Gholson. The reason for this theory is that the name Tolivar, which is the Americanized version of Taliferro appears several times in the Gholson family. LKH
