Reelected to Second First Continental Congress, he declined to serve and was a member of the Virginia Revolutionary conventions of 1775 and 1776. He was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1776, serving until his death. US Continental Congressman Theodorick Bland was his nephew.
