Thomas Coffey was the son of John Coffey and Jane Graves.

According to the Last Will and Testament of John Coffey, Thomas along with his siblings John, Edmond, Winifred, Reuben, Benjamin and Elizabeth inherited their father?s estate after the death of their mother, Jane Graves Coffey. The two eldest sons, James and William inherited five sterling shillings each. Thomas and his brother, Benjamin were the executors of the will which was executed in March of 1775.

According to the book, "Thomas Coffey and His Descendants", Thomas Coffey moved from Virginia to Wilkes County, North Carolina (present day Caldwell County) after his marriage to his second wife, Sarah Fields sometime between 1775 and 1780. He and his family were members of the Yadkin Grove Baptist Church which was built on the Coffey plantation on the east bank of the Yadkin River.
