Claiborne moved to Charlotte just after his home was broken up by the death of his first wife in order to have the assistance of his relatives in taking care of his 5 small children. After he married the widow Carter in 1778 [Jane Woodson Carter (nee Morton)]

Claiborne Barksdale was a soldier of the Revolution, serving in the Charlotte County Militia which saw considerable active service in several campaigns.

After the Revolution, Claiborne Barksdale settled down to a planter's life in Charlotte Co. and became a very prominent and prosperous man. He also conducted a mercantile business. His 1816 Will names his wife Jane Barksdale (nee Morton), and his children as Agnes M. Whitlock, Clabourn Barksdale and Mary Goode [is she married to a Goode in her mother's family?], Lucy Tate, Sarah Collier, Susannah Crenshaw, Grief Barksdale, William Barksdale.
