Lester was the second born son of the late George Hutcherson Hankins and Nannie (Marlowe) Hankins. He grew up in Axton, VA about a 10th of a mile from the County Line Christian Church and cemetery where he is now buried. While growing up he and his brothers were always interested in cars and he became a mechanic for most of his life. He was also a school bus driver in Axton as well as worked at the American Furniture Factory in Martinsville. In 1943 Lester joined the Navy and served during WWII on the USS Vicksburg and fought in the South Pacific. When Lester returned from the war he met and married Beatrice B. Burnett on October 5, 1946. They had four children: William L. Hankins, Jr., Linda Diane (Short), Lois Marie (Carroll), and John Lewis Hankins. Lester moved his family from Axton to Maryland in 1957 where he lived out the rest of his life.
