Movher lived to be 93. She was so meek and patience with everyone. She worked so hard all her life, cooking, milking and taking care of all her family. Her mom died when she was about 12 so she quit school to take care of her brothes and dad. After her dad married again, her stepmom insisted she return to school. She went as far as the school taught. Her teacher told her that she had taught her every thing she knew. When she married , her husband's mom had also died so she took care of her father-n-law and two brother -n-laws and three sister-n-laws. Of course they pitched in and helped. She had 9 children. The oldest boy was killed in WWII. When most of her children were grown, she started raising grandchildren. I was the first! Everyone that knew her loved her. I still think of her several times every day.

Was born in a cabin on John Reynolds Place, Callands, Va

Charlie Wade Reynolds: From 1946 until his death he was a
farmer, then a merchant who owned Charlie's Store in Grady,
Va. From 1915-1945 (from the age of 27) he lived on the
Swanson Place and Charlie Wells' Place.

For a year or two after he was married he and Annie lived
on his father's (John Henry Reynolds) farm, which was sold
after his death. The cabin was very cold in the winter and
in bad shape.

Charlie, Annie, Basil & their baby Edith, Charlie's
sisters, Callie & Tabbie and brothers Bogey & Silas then
moved to the Swanson Place which was just across the road.
Tabbie died from TB while living there. She was in her
20's and was engaged to a man from Danville. She was
buried on the Lee Reynolds place near her parents. They
stayed there until about 1936. The rest of the children
were born while they lived there (7). It was a beautiful
place surrounded with Cherry Trees. The children played in
the Turkeycock Creek and the woods.

Uncle Allen and Aunt Charlotte lived on the place too.
They were an old Black couple who had been slaves when they
were children. Annie said that she couldn't have "done it"
without Aunt Charlotte. Annie told many stories about Aunt
Charlotte and how she helped care for the children. Aunt
Charlotte lived in a cabin and cooked over a fireplace and
carried water in a churn on top of her head up a hill from
the spring. She also made ash bread, so called, because
the dough was placed on a flat rock and covered with ashes
and placed in the fire where it cooked. You then brushed
or cut off the ashes and ate the bread. J. W. Swanson
built his house where the cabin had stood (residence in
1930).

Annie (daughter of James Edward "Ned" Slaydon and Aneliza Price) was born 16 Jan 1891, Sandy River, Pittsylvania, Virginia ; died 27 May 1984, Danville Memorial Hospital, Danville, Virginia ; was buried 29 May 1984, County Line Christian Church, Callands, Pittsylvania, Virginia . Today would have been my Grandma Reynolds' birthday. I have so many fond memories of her. Annie Eliza Slaydon Reynolds was one of the kindest women that I have ever known. When she was around 12 (maybe younger), her mother passed away and she quit school to stay at home to take care of the kids and the house. When her father remarried, her step-mother encouraged her to go back to school. Not sure how many more years of schooling she got. Her home was always open to us. I am sure that we probably drove her a little bit crazy because there were kids everywhere, all the time. I do not remember her ever raising her voice to any of us. Teresa probably could answer that question better since she lived with her. Grandma Reynolds had 9 children. She lost her second-born, Basil in World War II. I often think about what she and Grandpa must have felt like when they got the telegram that their oldest son was dead.

Deidre Reynolds Stone The Slaydon's. Grandma spelled it with a "d". Some others spell it with a "t". Uncle Kenneth for one. Cole's middle name is Slaydon and I labored over how to spell it. After talking to Mama (Sandra) and Nancy it was spelled with a "d". Now he tells me he wishes that was his first name. He loves it.

Sandra Reynolds Mother was the best person I have ever known. She always said, "If you can't say something good about someone , don't say anything at all. She followed this rule herself. I was her foot person, I took care of her feet for years and was happy to do it, she appreciated it so much. Glad to do a little something for her after all she did for me. I can remember her reading books to me when I was a little girl, guess that's where I got my love of reading. She never raised her voice to anyone, always so meek, still think of her every day. Wish I had kept all the wonderful informative letters that she wrote me while I lived in Newport News and NY. She wrote to me just about every week. Loved those letters. She told me about Teresa climbing the tree in the front yard in Feb., with only her panties on. It was sleeting out and she wouldn't come down. Mother though it was so funny. Will stop but I could write a book about our sweet grandma Annie.

I have another story for you. The day John Henry Reynolds, his wife Sally Frances Wells Reynolds and children, Charlie Wade, Mary Ann, Tabitha, Bogie, Silas and Callie were moving from the cabin on John Henry's dads place(Allen Gilmer Reyno) there wasn't a bridge across Turkeycock creek so they had to lead the horse and wagon across. Mary Ann, the oldest girl was carrying the baby, Callie. She dropped her in the creek. Of course they grabbed her up and got her across. But I heard Aunt Mary Ann and Aunt Callie laughing and talking about it when they were old. Their Dad had bought a farm on Rd. 57 on the left just across the road from the CLCC parsonage (County Line Christian Church). When John Henry died the place had to be sold to pay off debts. Charlie moved the whole family across the road to Swanson place where they share cropped for about 18 years, I think. Then they moved to his Uncle Charlie Well's place in about 1936 and share cropped there until 1946 when he bought Grady store.

Allen Gilmer Reynolds was named by his mother, Sarah Philpott, for her brother, Allen Gilmer Philpott.

Allen Gilmer Reynolds + Martha Ann Jackson d/o Judith
Emmerson and James Samuel Jackson.

There must be s story here about Martha Ann Jackson before her marriage to Allen Gilmer Reynolds, on 24 May 1843. Their oldest son, Levi was born 5 years before their marriage. Levi C. Reynolds is shown on the 1850 Va Census with Allen & Martha. He is 12 years old and his brother, James Samuel is 6 years old. On the 1860 VA census, he appears as Chesley, still with Allen and Martha; I believe Levi is Martha's son that she named for her uncle Levi, in whose household she lived after the death of her mother, Judith Emmerson. Two of Martha's younger siblings are mentioned in the Will of Levi; who left them property provided they remained with his wife Ann (Judith's sister) until her death.

There are several dates recorded in various places, for the marriage of Martha Jackson and Allen Reynolds. Ancestry shows 18 Dec 1833; recorded in Provo, UTAH; the headstone, marking their graves shows 15 May 1842, and another record, still a third date. Found; Chesley Jackson killed in the Civil War; memoralized on a black granite War Memorial in Danville, Virginia. See Photo

Allen married Martha Ann Jackson 24 May 1843, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Martha (daughter of James Samuel Jackson and Judith Emmerson) was born 30 Mar 1819, North Carolina or Virginia; died 24 Mar 1909, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; was buried , Worlds, Rt. 969, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. Martha Ann Jackson, d/o James Samuel and Judith Emmerson Jackson is the niece of Levi Jackson. Levi and his wife Ann Emmerson (sister to Martha's mother, Judith) had no children of their own and reared Judith's children after her death in circa 1828. Martha too, was probably in their household in the 1830 Census which shows one female child age 10-15 along with 6 other children. Levi and Ann had no children. Presumably these children are those of Ann's sister. It is likely that Martha named her eldest son, Levi for her uncle who helped raise her.
At the time of the 1880 Census they were living in Franklin Co., next door to Susan Bryant, proven to be a daughter of James, (sister of Martha Ann) Martha Ann is named for her mother's grandmother, Martha Walker.

The 'modern' marker for Allen Gilmer and Martha Ann Jackson Reynolds was installed by Mrs. Ruth Mae Reynolds Marlowe, d/o William Barton "Bart" and Nancy "Nannie" Reynolds. Martha Ann Jackson was Ruth's grandmother.
Martha Ann Jackson is the daughter of James Samuel Jackson and Judith Emmerson. Judith Emmerson is the daughter of John Emmerson. Judith Emmerson DOB of 1787 is from an entry in the LDS IGI. She was deceased by Jan 1833 when James Jackson married a second time and two of her younger children were in the household of her sister and brother-in-law Anne Emmerson Jackson and Levi Jackson.
