  1. 2.  Samuel Smith CarterSamuel Smith Carter was born 27 Nov 1789, Prince William Co., Virginia (son of Giles of Povall Carter and Mary/Martha Smith); died 13 Apr 1852, Richmond, Virginia; was buried , Carter Graveyard, Richmond, Virginia.

    Notes:

Samuel Smith Carter married widow Ann Heisler Douglas in Richmond in 1811 and died in 1832, leaving his wife Ann and their children, who moved in with Samuel's brother John at Myrtle Grove (now Forest Lawn Cemetery) where they stayed until death. All are buried there and headstones are still present as the estate was sold and converted to a cemetery much later on, but their stones remain among all the more recent ones. This is the only link I have connecting Samuel to John and thus to Carter and Martha, in addition to the clue of his middle name Smith matching his mother's maiden name, but I think it is a very good one. Also, Samuel named one of his son's Gustavus Giles. -Paul Jesperson

Image 1816 second page of Poval's will. Looks like it was signed Poval Carter so he may have written the will himself. Younger children Ann, Molly and Robert are mentioned on this page to have items after wife's death.

Note The Witness to the will Obadiah Smith is Son Giles Carter's father-in-Law. Giles Married Mary Smith and had several sons that settled in the Richmond area. Paul Jesperson's wife is a descendant of this family and there is another descendant who tested his dna on 23 and me. The test was supposed to indicate R1a1a....haven't seen these results. Jesperson was supposed to have a male ancestor to be tested, but I don't think he ever did.

Image pc001 Is an administrators account of Poval Carter Son of Daniel Carter concerning the Will of Daniel Carter Son John (B) Carter who lived on an adjoining farm witnessed the Will. John and Susannah were not named in the will Daniel was more concerned with his unmarried daughters . Daniel's life Jane was deceased by the time of the will.

We know that Poval Carter of Henrico County had a son Robert from his LWT recorded on page 1815 of Volume 4 of the Miscellaneous Records of Henrico Co., Va. This will recites " Item, I give & Bequeath this Land & houses where I now live after the death of my Wife to my son Robert to him & his heirs. " We also know that this Robert Carter was born after 1744 because he was under 21 years of age when in May 1765 Robert, orphan of Poval Carter, was bound out by Henrico Parish churchwardens. [HCOB 1763-1767/454]. This makes this Robert Carter of the appropriate age to be a candidate for the Robert Carter, in Henrico, to marry Susannah Evans in Goochland.
