Joseph (son of James Thomas Carter and Martha McCann) was born 17 Jan 1856, Halifax Co., Virginia; died 8 Dec 1940, Sutherlin, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia; was buried , Highland Burial Park, Danville, Pittsylvania, Virginia.     Notes:

    Edward Palmer Carter was raised by Joseph and Mildred Groome Carter; Edwards mother, Eliza Hill died when he was 2 years old, but his father remarried to Laura Hancock when he was 4 years old. Obituary for Joseph S. Carter names E.P. [Edward Palmer] as son with three children and three grandchildren. Remembered by Philip Franklin Carter that Edward Palmer Carter was a great friend of Carter Glass Powell.
