Two Richard Carters are found in Antrim Parish [Halifax Co., VA] in the early records.

One Richard is noted as a Gunsmith is then found with Frances as his wife until he dies [bef Jul 1787].

The second a Tailor. Richard Carter, a Tailor is proved to have married Susannah Bigger in Prince Edward Co., and later moved to Halifax Co., VA

By 1774 another Richard is noted in deeds with a wife, Mary Ann. She is believed to be the Granddaughter of Susanna Carter; now proved by dna analysis NOT to be of the Giles Carter lines.

In the 1785 First Census of the United States; all three Richards are shown and labeled (GS), (T), (S) plus 5 other Richard Carters with no notations.

9 Feb 1779 (PDB5/149) from George Carter of P, [Pittsylvania] to Samuel Atkinson of Cumberland Co., for 1000~, 450 acres in P on the branches of the Lower Double Cr. of Dan River, bounded by pine pointers near the old road, then to Colo Wilson, the Great Branch, Richd Carter. Signed - George Carter. Wit - Richd Carter, Robert Waltrs, John Atkinson, Mary, the wife of the sd George Carter, relinquished her right of dower to the lands within mentioned. Recorded 20 Apr 1779. [Richard Carter GS is dead in July 1778, as his inventory is returned, therefore this is Richard (Tailor)] The implication of this record is that both families of Richard the Tailor and Richard the Gunsmith Carter are acquainted, as Richard Gunsmith could not have witnessed this deed after his death.

Richard Carter's Daughter, Mary Frances, married Frederick Miller. Frederick Miller testifies in the Chancery matter of John Carter's estate when the Legatees file suit for equal division of the land and slaves. This occurs 19 years after his death; presumably when the youngest son reaches age 21. We believe Frederick Miller would not testify unless he is a family member.

Richard married Frances Walters. Frances (daughter of William Walters and Susannah McBee/Magby/Mocobee/Mocaboy/McGehee/McGregor) was born Abt 1736, Brunswick Co., Virginia; died Aft 1803, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. [Group Sheet]

  2. 5.  Frances Walters was born Abt 1736, Brunswick Co., Virginia (daughter of William Walters and Susannah McBee/Magby/Mocobee/Mocaboy/McGehee/McGregor); died Aft 1803, Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

    Notes:

Frances Carter, Widow of Richard GS Carter married James Lucas, the father of her son's wife [Spencer Carter, m. Verlinda Lucas, d/o James.]

Son, Charles Ewell Carter names daughter Lucy Walters Carter; his wife Kesiah Walters, and Frances Carter (nee Walters) are relatives. Moreover, after studying this family for many years and observing the naming patterns employed by them, I have concluded that Frances Walters [wife of Richard Carter, Gunsmith] is very likely the granddaughter of Immigrant, Charles Ewell. The name Ewell is passed down for several generations among her descendants, as is the Magby name for her grandmother, Susannah Magby.

By proving who she is NOT, Frances Walters, wife of the Gunsmith. She is not Frances Neal; the Neals located in this part of Halifax are of the 'Beaverpond of Amelia Neals' The d/o William and Martha Neal married Samuel Carter. His daughter, Louisiana Franklin, married Thomas David Neal of the same family of Beaverpond Neals. So there was an association between the Carters and these Neals; but not to the Gunsmith, and certainly not to the Daniel Neales.

I also considered the Watkins of Chickhomany Creek and Swift Creek; location of Giles families very early, but no found connection to the Gunsmith.

Some member of the Walters family is shown singed, [witness] on every document signed by Richard and George and Frances Carter. [denotes a family member]

The Walters are documented with 4 Magby wives. Why else would Richard Elijah Carter, s/o Spencer Carter name one of his children with the middle name Magby, if his grandmother, Frances Carter is not a Magby. [The Magbys are Scottish immigrants who travel from Charles Co., MD]

This preponderance of circumstantial evidence and thorough research into the families around her, has led me to conclude Frances Walters married Richard Gunsmith Carter and after his death, James Lucas. She is the daughter of William Walters and Susannah Magby [Mockbee, etc]

Son, Charles Ewell Carter marries back into the Walters.

    Name:
I expect she is Mary Frances; she names her daughter so.

    Died:
    Her marriage to James Lucas

    Notes:

NOTE: The name Ewell is passed down this line for several generations. It is even misspelled as Yewel in one case. This is further evidence of Frances Walters identity.
