    Died:
Mrs. Jane Carter died the middle of February 1803. At this time her husband was already dead; therefore, he died before 1803. By 1807-8 a Chancery Suit ensued brought by David Carter's heirs against Jesse Walton, Executor of the Estate. It seems to be regarding board of David Carter's orphaned daughter, [who later married Mr. William Smith] and her board while living in his home for 3 years after her mother's death.

    Notes:

Have discovered a Thomas in the DAR Patriot Index, b. 19 June 1753, d. 9 Feb 1825. Marriage Record in Early Virginia Marriages by Southern Book Co., 1953, lists marriage as 21 Nov 1771.

A Family Bible of Thomas' son, John W. Carter, gives Thomas' parents as Thomas Carter and Mary Kilpatrick. Their marriage is in the Douglas Register, page 14, indicating that the marriage was recorded on pages 21-26 of the Parish Register of Goochland begun ANNO 1756 by William Douglas, Minister.

Mary Anthony and Winnifred, her sister, both daughters of Joseph Anthony, Jr., married brother Josiah Carter and John, his brother, both sons of Thomas Carter, Jr. and his wife, Mary Kilpatrick.

Death Cert. lists her death as before Jan 20 1746-47 in Henrico--why? DEATH: Goochland Co. OB 7, p. 402; Jordan vs. Cox in 1754 Richard Perrin received a patent on 14 Mar 1672 for 740 acres, 1 rod, 24 perches. [Va Patent Bk 6:445]. 474 acres of this was called "World's End" and had been granted Mathew Edlow on 2 Oct 1656. In 1691, he deeded to Thomas Farrar and Katherine his wife (who was said Richard's daughter) 256 acres of "World' s End" "where I now live" bounded by the [James] River and William Ballow. In his will dated 16 Mar 1694/5, Richard Perrin bequeathed "my house and land commonly called "World's End", 400 acres with 200 acres fronting river, to my dear wife Katherine for life, and at her death to daughter Sarah. . . ." This daughter Sarah married William Cocke 2 Dec 1695.William Cocke made his will 5 Nov 1717 and left "all my lands" to his son William. However, William died without issue (having had children, but they predeceased him). His widow, Judith (Stewart) Cocke married 2nd to Francis Redford and received her dower in the above "World's End". The balance went to William Cocke's sisters: Temperance (who m. Abraham Bayly)[Bailey]; Catherine (who m. John Burton) but died young leaving an eldest son John; Mary (m. John Redford); and Sara h (a half-sister who m. 1st William Cox & 2nd Thomas Jordan).Judith, widow of Wm. Cocke, now wife of Francis Redford, relinquished her rights in the tract to William Randolph on 5 Aug 1747. [Henrico Will & Deed Bk 1737-1750, p. 297]Rev. William Finney who had married a sister of William Cocke (owner of 256 acres of World's End by virtue of his marriage to Katharine Perrin) ended up with part of "World's End" which he bequeathed his son William in his will dated 3 Feb 1726.[Henrico Will & Deed Bk 1725-1737, p. 104]. William Finney, the son, sold a small piece of land (possibly part of World's End) to Abraham Bayly [Bailey] which is mentioned in a deed from Peter Cock Bailey of Mecklenburg County, VA to Francis Pearce in 1788 which transferrs two tracts, the second of which is "five acres, being the parcel of land purchased of Willliam Finne and adjoining the first." [Henrico Dd Bk 2:663] The first tract was 47 acres whereon Abraham Bailey, grandfather of said Peter Cocke Bailey died. It began "on Cornelius 's Cr on S side and thence a south course of marked trees along Col. Heth's [Heath?] line to Peyton Randolph's line, thence along the said Randolph's line, a northeast course to William Gile's line, thence along the said Gile's line of marked trees a northwest course til it joins the land that was Joseph Bailey's; thence along the said line to where it begun."[Henrico Deed B k 1737-1750, p. 297.] On 26 Sept 1747, William Finney Gent to William Randolph, Gent. of Goochland Co for L960 [3 tracts]:1. 265 acres which was purchased of Thomas Farrar and Katharine [nee Perrin] his wife and John & Joseph Farrar their sons by William Finney, decd. father of the said William Finney conveyed to him by deed dated March 10, 1723.-2. also 400 acres, adj the 265 , purchased fr John Radford and Mary his wife, Thomas Jordan and Sarah his wife, and Abraham Bailey and Temperance his wife--the above sd. lying on the N side of James River in Henrico Co and was commonly called "World's End."-3. also 371 acres in same Co. adj Wm Eppes, the same being pt of a tract granted Thomas Cocke by patent dated Apr 20, 1687 and by him devised to Mary Finney, late mother of said William Finney. Sept 26, 1747. THIS 3rd tract is NOT PART OF WORLD'S END. So in 1747 William Randolph owned almost all, if not all of the origina l "World's End." For a time I thought it was a part of Chatsworth, but after seeing a survey of Chatsworth in the first plat book of Henrico County, I could see that Chatsworth was too far north and it was not on Cornelius Creek as World's End definitely was. The 1656 patent of Matthew Edlow referred to in Richard Perrin's patent does not appear in the Virginia Land Patent Books. The patent for Richard Perrin's land is mostly undecipherable. Most of the surrounding patents do not give accurate metes and bounds --just vaguely states "Westerly into the Woods" etc.

Book an ancestry 'Historical Southern families-vol 6" makes this Sarah to be his eldest daughter by a first wife, name unknown.

This John Carter was first married to Lucy (LNU)
"On 22 May 1770 John Carter and Josiah Carter of Pittsylvania County deeded [DB 10/51] to John Strang of Louisa County, for £90, a parcel of land lying in Goochland County on branches of Lickinghole and Bolings creek containing 275a. This is surely the land devised to these two sons of Thomas Carter in (32.) above. The deed contains the phrase "... said John Carter his wife and Josiah Carter their heirs executors administrators ..." and is signed by John Carter, Josiah Carter and Lucy Carter. Thus we have this John Carter with a wife named Lucy Carter and by inference an unwed Josiah Carter on this date."
    -- Dan Wallace

John married Winnifred Anthony 21 Nov 1771, Goochland Co., Virginia. Winnifred (daughter of Joseph Anthony, Sr. and Elizabeth Clark) was born 8 Apr 1765, Goochland, Virginia Colony; died 10 May 1855, Georgia. [Group Sheet]
