    Newspaper Account:
Here?s how The Omaha World Herald told his story on page 1 of the May 12, 1893 edition:

??Two Farmers Fatallay [sic] Quarrel Over Horses
NEWPORT, Neb. May 11 ? ?A shooting affray occurred today twelve miles north of town near the Niobrara River. A farmer named Lewis Goochoy had some horses stray during the night and on going to hunt them he found them in a pasture belonging to another man named Newton Turpin, an old resident of the river flats. Upon finding his horses grazing in the pasture he quietly drove them out of the open gate, but before he got started home, Turpin called out to him something he (Goochoy) could not understand as the wind was blowing furiously at the time, but when the man with the horses did not do as he was bid Turpin raised his gun and fired. [It is assumed that Turpin mistakenly thought that Goochoy was stealing Turpin?s horses.] Turpin?s gun was hardly raised before Goochoy pulled his own and fired, the shot taking effect in Turpin?s stomach. Goochoy came to town this afternoon and gave himself up to the justice of the peace. Both men have large families. Turpin is not dead yet.?

    And nine days later:

?NEWPORT, Neb. May 20 ? Newton Turpin, the man who was shot by Louis Goochoy May 11 on the Niobrara River north of Newport, died this morning from the effects of his wounds. Goochoy is under the?planage of the county officials today

Halifax Co., VA, Will Bk 3, p. 96, Will of Michael Turpin of H, very sick and weak of body but of perfect mind,

To my wife Edith--all my stock and my household furniture and the land which lies the other side of the creek, during her natural life, and then to descend to my sons John and James. I also give my wife the mill and half the profit (the other half to son Obediah Turpin).

To my son Obediah Turpin--the remainder of the land. If the rent of the land does not pay for the land at the end of 4 years, then each of the boys before mentioned to pay equally what is due.

    James Turpin
    Sex: M
    Death: AFT 1812
This James Turpin disappeared from the Halifax Co., VA, tax lists in 1812. He and John Turpin who m. Elizabeth Carter were the only male Turpins in Halifax Co. around the time George Turpin was born. It is possible George was a son of James & Polly Smith Turpin and I am placing him with this couple as a place marker. There is little evidence of James Turpin's presence in VA and I believe that is why most researchers placed George with John. It is possible that George was John's nephew. Research continues.

Halifax Co., VA, Deed Bk 16, p. 632, Jun 24, 1796 from James Tirpin [Turpin] to Robert D. Note: It remains unknown exactly who George's parents were. Some researchers place him with John & Elizabeth Carter Turpin. It is possible, however, that he was a son of James Turpin who m. Mary "Polly" Smith. Both John and James were the only male Turpins enumerated in Halifax Co.'s tithe lists during the years George was likely born. They were both sons of Michael & Edith Turpin. Michael Turpin died about 1794 and Edith was tithed a year or so after that. This James Turpin disappeared from the tithe lists about 1812. George Turpin was first tithed in 1818.

He represented Halifax County in the Virginia House of Delegates during five terms between 1779 and 1787, and therefore served four terms in the state senate. In 1781 he was appointed commander of the county militia with the rank of colonel, and served during the Revolution.
