    [Obituary, Lewiston Tribune; 18-Feb-2011]

Jack Alvin Ankney Jr., 57, Pomeroy
    Friday, February 18, 2011

Jack Alvin Ankney Jr. passed away at his home in Pomeroy
Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, from brain cancer, which he battled
for 21/2 years. Jack was born Aug. 26, 1953, in Lewiston,
    to Jack and Phyllis Ankney.

He grew up in Winchester and Sweetwater. He attended school
at the St. Joseph Mission School and Lapwai School,
graduating in 1972. In his teen years he rode the rodeo
circuit in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana, in
    bareback and bull riding.

After graduation, he went to work for Potlatch Corp. in the
sawmill and stayed there for 14 years before transferring
to the pulp and paper side. His progression of jobs
included the layboy, wiretier man, cutterman and machine
tender or operator, until he became ill with cancer. He
retired Dec. 31, 2008, with 36 years at Potlatch Corp.

Jack married Cathy Bailey Sept. 6, 1975, in Spalding. They
had two children, a daughter, Hope, and a son, Jayson.
Their marriage ended in a divorce.

On March 15, 1991, Jack met Christine Van Ausdle McGreevy
on a blind date set up by Jack's friend, Glenda Albright,
and Chris's sister, Carol Whittaker, to take Western swing
dance lessons. They were married July 15, 1995, at Coeur
d'Alene. With the marriage he gained three more children,
    Lara, Natalie and Ryan McGreevy.

Jack has enjoyed many activities including his horses,
pets, hunting, fishing, camping, bicycle riding and taking
walks, but especially spending time with family. While
younger, Jack played guitar for his children, and enjoyed
sketching wildlife animals and doing some watercolor
painting. During the past 15 years he has enjoyed teaching
his grandchildren to ride horses, shoot a bow and arrow,
and enjoy the outdoors. Jack loved going to any horse
event, especially rodeos, and he thoroughly enjoyed
participating in team penning as a member of the Walla
Walla Team Penners Association. Jack enjoyed the last four
months, not only spending time with his wife, but telling
stories and laughing with his caregiver, Elaine Scoggin.

Jack leaves behind his wife, Chris Ankney, whom he called
his guardian angel; a brother, Cliff and Vanessa Ankney of
Tracy, Calif.; a sister, Twila and Bill Madison of
Culdesac; daughters Hope and John Carroll of Pomeroy, Lara
and Scott Hagerman of Plains, Mont., and Natalie and Scott
Urbiha of Liberty Lake, Wash.; a son, Ryan and Ronda
McGreevy of Milton-Freewater, Ore.; and 11 grandchildren,
Alex, Kitiara and Katrina Hagerman, Brooks, Chase, Kinsey
and Kaycie Urbiha, Caitlin and Braden McGreevy, and
Elisabeth and Ben Carroll. There are more special relatives
and friends, too many to name.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Phyllis
    Ankney; and his son, Jayson.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at
Richardson-Brown Funeral Home, 750 Columbia St., Pomeroy. A
covered-dish reception will be conducted at the Garfield
County Fairgrounds, 99 Fairgrounds Road, Pomeroy, following
    the funeral service.

Memorials may be made in Jack's name to the Pomeroy
Ambulance Fund c/o: Diane Koller, 3102 Kirby Mayview Road,
Pomeroy, WA 99347; or the National Brain Tumor Society, 124
Watertown St., suite 2-D, Watertown, MA 02472; or a charity
    of donor's choice.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at
