Served in the Revolutionary War with Thomas Henderson's Company of the Virginia State Line. According to Page 187 of the 1983 edition of Virginia Military Records, Richard Reynolds, 32, was the first individual listed as a member of this company of the Henry County, Virginia, Militia. Bartlett Reynolds was only other Reynolds listed with the Militia as a member of James Dillard's Company.
General Order was issued by Col. Abram Penn, dated March 1781. Colonel Abram was the commander of the Militia from Henry County, preparatory to the battle of Guilford C. H. in North Carolina which took place on March 14-15. Col Penn was "ordered to march the Militia to Hillsborough, NC, or any post where General Stevens may be with the men under his command, observing to avoid a surprise by the enemy, by the best route to be found."
The Battle of Guilford's Courthouse and Revolutionary War events leading up to it are summarized in the following excerpt from Grolier's Encyclopedia: " As the guerrillas tied down Cornwallis, still a third American army formed in the South under Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene, who then launched the most effective military campaign of the war. Greene's basic plan was to keep his numerically superior antagonist, Cornwallis, off balance by a series of rapid movements and by cooperating with the South Carolina guerrilla leaders. Greene audaciously divided his small army, sending Brig. Gen. Daniel Morgan into western South Carolina, where he destroyed Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton's Tory Legion at Cowpens (Jan. 17, 1781). When Cornwallis pursued Morgan, Greene united his army, led Cornwallis on an exhausting chase into North Carolina, and finally fought him to a draw at Guilford Courthouse (Mar. 15, 1781). While the British general limped eastward and then northward to the Virginia coast, the resourceful Greene returned to South Carolina, and between April and July picked off, one by one, every British post save Charleston and Savannah, where the enemy remained isolated and impotent until peace came. "
It is not known whether the Virginia troops arrived in time to participate in the battle. This is the only mention of Richard Reynolds, Henderson's Company, or the Henry County Militia found to date.
Prior to the war Reynolds lived an extended period in North Carolina, to which he returned after the war. How long he lived in Henry County, Virginia, is not known. It appears that most of the couple's 15 children were born in Virginia, if the birthdates are reasonably accurate. He died in Wilkes Co., Georgia

Orange Co Virginia deed bk. 13, p. 103-6. Indenture 6 Jul 1754 bet. John Spotswood & Richard Reynolds for rents & covenants hereinafter mentioned, to farm lett 200 ac...Natural lives of RICHARD, SPENCER & GEORGE Reynolds, or longest liver...1000 lbs tobacco. Signed John Spotswood & Richard Reynolds; wit. Robert Spotswood, W. McWilliams, F. Fox, rec. 28 aug 1760.

Another researcher with whom I'm working believes this was a lease that included Spencer and George, the two young sons of Richard, in order to maximize the term of the lease.

Also, in Orange Co. VA court records dated March 29 1754,
Richard Reynolds is named as a defendant in a lawsuit, and George Doggett is providing securities for Richard. I believe, as indicated in my earlier posting, that Richard married Sarah Ann Doggett, not Sarah Hamilton; this suggests that perhaps father-in-law George Doggett was providing securities for his son-in-law in this suit.

Although there appear to be transactions in both Orange Co. and Culpeper Co. VA records, it looks as though this Richard may have owned land on Cedar Run in Culpeper Co.
