Reference MARRIAGE BONDS AND MINISTERS? RETURNS OF HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1753 - 1800, Complied by Catherine Lindsay Knorr: 10 September 1789, William Richardson and Elizabeth Carter, dau. of Theodrick Carter, who consents. Surety was Hartwell Carter. Married by Rev. John Atkinson. Rev. Atkinson is also on record as marrying Jesse Carter, another brother of Elizabeth. The location of their homeplace will later be called Pittsylvania Co., VA.
NO DIRECT EVIDENCE IS FOUND TO SUPPORT THIS CONNECTION; Hartwell Carter stood Security for the marriage of Elizabeth Judith Carter to Bill Richardson, with her father's consent. Likely he is her brother or at least her half-brother depending on the date of death of Miss Townes. [Miss Townes is the 1st wife of Theodorick Carter, who later married Judith Cunningham. Hartwell married Sally Colquitt/Colquett.
At least one other researcher has placed Hartwell as the s/o Denaita (?) Townes and another Theodorick Carter, of Halifax Co. Virginia. [The dates don't work for this alliance.]
Sally Colquitt is the daughter of Anthony and Christian Terry Colqiuitt. Anthony,(who married Sarah Darden) is the s/o John Colquitt, b. 1682, Isle of Wight, VA d. Jul 1769 and his wife Ann Hawes; John, the son of another John b. in 1636, in St. Sampsons Parish, Isle of Guernsey, d. 1689, Isle of Wight, VA. This John, The Immigrant, married Lucretia Anthony, b. 1643, d. 1689.
Sally Colquitt married Hartwell Carter in Halifax Co., Virginia, 20 Sep 1792. Their son Anthony Terry Colquitt, named for Sally's Father and Mother, was born in Virginia, before their journey to Georgia. Anthony, s/o Hartwell and Sally Carter, m. Sarah Darden and then produced Sampson Carter (married Amanda Jane Sellers), who was the father of Jasper Carter and Hannah Jane Owens. Jasper and Hannah had a daughter Hannah Belle Carter, who married Daniel Creamer. Daniel and Hannah Bell Carter Creamer are the parents of Ruth Creamer who married Terry Harris.
Most of this lineage is taken from correspondence of a descendant searching for evidence. I witnessed the marriage record. No father for Hartwell is listed; I believe the best we will get is this record of Hartwell standing Security for Elizabeth Judith Carter, who we believe is his sister. -mfe
Other circumstantial evidence linking these Carters and Terrys and Colquitts is a Will of Jonathan Colquitt recorded in Halifax Co., in 1802. He mentions his daughter, Nancy Bostic. A grandson of Theodorick and Judith Cunningham Carter, Thomas T. Carter, married Margaret Dozier Bostic. These and other clues lead us to believe these links are not coincidence. [Jonathan Colquitt's daughter, Nancy has married a Bostic of the same family. Moreover, Johnathan Colquitts will references his son, Ransom [Sally and Hartwell also name a son Ransom], and he appoints Hartwell Carter, 'his friend' Executor. Test FTDNA 24971 Hartwell Carter is Haplogroup J2 [J-M172]which is not a match to the Giles Carter lines for either Theo or Giles2. One would look for evidence on the paper trail.
