May 17, 2011 - 05:59:28 pm CDT. Yanceyville (Caswell
County, North Carolina) - Helen Pearl Powell Hodges, 90,
formerly of 169 Oak Tree St., passed away Wednesday, May
11, 2011 at Brian Health and Rehabilitation Facility,
following a long period of declining health. She was born
in Caswell County April 23, 1921 to William Thomas Powell
and Sue Mitchell Powell. Funeral Services were held
Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Prospect United
Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. David Grissom Interment
followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hodges was a native
of the Purley Community and was married in 1943 to Roy
Irvin "Jiggs" Hodges for 49 years. They later moved to
Yanceyville. She had been a resident of the Alzheimer's
unit of the Brian Health and Rehabilitation Facility for
the past five years. She was a homemaker and a member of
Prospect United Methodist Church, where she had served as a
Sunday School Teacher, in the children's department and was
active in the United Methodist Women's organization, and
was awarded a lifetime membership for service. As a member
of the Rose Garden Club of Yanceyville, she held numerous
positions during a span of years in the 1950s and 1960s.
Mrs. Hodges held the position of Registrar for Yanceyville
voting precinct for 20 years. She acquired a reputation for
outstanding culinary skills as her luscious homemade layer
cakes and pies were always in demand. Dining in her home
was always a memorable occasion for guests.
The family wants to acknowledge the dedicated Staff of the
Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Facility of
Yanceyville and Community Home Care and Hospice. Survivors
are son William Irvin "Billy" Hodges, daughter-in-law
Brenda Wood Hodges, granddaughter Laura Beth Hodges Calhoun
and grandson-in-law Jared Calhoun, and two sisters-in-law,
Jeannine Hodges of Reidsville and Naomi Hodges of Fort
Pierce, Fla. In addition to her parents, her husband Roy
Irvin "Jiggs" Hodges, brothers, Frank Powell, William
"Bill" Powell, Fred Powell, and sisters Garnett P. Brooks
and Mary Mitchell P. Wellens predeceased her. The family
received friends immediately following the committal
service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers,
memorials may be made to Prospect United Methodist Church,
c/o Bobby Brewer, P.O. Box 58, Yanceyville, NC 27379.
Harrelson Funeral Service is assisting the Hodges family
with arrangements.

James G. Mitchell Dies At Blanch;Funeral Friday
News was received here this morning of the death at Blanch
N. C. of James G. Mitchell, age 75, widely known farmer in
Caswell county and a leader in his community. He was seized
apparently while he slept with a heart attack for he was
dead when found. Death apparently took place at about last
midnight. He had not complained of being ill recently, it
was said. The funeral is to be held tomorrow afternoon from
the residence, interment to be made nearby.
Mr. Mitchell suffered the loss of his wife many years ago
but he is survived by the following children: Mrs. Mattie
Mitchell, Danville; Mrs. W. T. Powell, Blanch, N. C.; Mrs.
Cullen Bryant, Milton, N. C.; Miss Lady Mitchell, Raleigh,
N. C.; Mrs. T. O. Pinchback, Raleigh, N. C.; Charles
Mitchell, Blanch; John Mitchell, Washington, D. C.; and J.
C. Mitchell, Hampton.
He also is survived by two brothers Robert Mitchell, of
Blanch, N. C. and Charles Mitchell of Lynchburg.

Mastin Jefferson Powell apparently was married twice. Note that the obituary of his son William Brooks Powell refers to a half-brother named John B. Powell. And, the obituary of John Bibb Powell refers to three half-sisters. It appears that Mastin James Powell's first wife was Susan Hubbard, and that she was the mother of John Bibb Powell. That both wives had the given name Susan caused some confusion.
The 1850 US Federal Census (Caswell County, North Carolina) also lists a Mastin Powell (25, born in Caswell County, farmer), apparently with daughter Mary I. (3, born in Caswell County), and son John (1, born in Caswell County). These are children of the Mastin Jefferson Powell of this entry their mother would be Susan Hubbard.
