Mastin, son of David Powell (d.1801) was a respected member of the community. I don't know why he was executor of a Smith estate unless it was because of his status in the community. He married a Carter[ Polly,d/oRichard] and his brother (David, Jr.) married a Smith. Perhaps that is where the connection came form. David Jr married (I think) Sarah Wynne Smith but I don't know anything about her family.
That community was centered around the present town of Halifax, Virginia which is only a few miles from South Boston. Mastin later settled along the Dan River between Danville and South Boston where he ran a tavern, had a race track and lots of kids. A good portion of the Powells in north central NC descend from Mastin and his wife Elizabeth [his wife is Mary O. Carter, d/o Richard and Susannah Bigger]. I do know that David and Sarah moved to NC shortly after their marriage. Mastin's oldest son, Carter Powell, was a wealthy landowner in the vicinity of Milton, NC.

Mastin was my 3rd G grandfather. Interesting family history ... his father was David Powell, hiw mother was Mary Epps Powell (2nd cousin to Thomas Jefferson). Mary died and David took in and maried a widow , Susannah Carter, with several young children. Mastin and Susannah's daughter Polly hit it right off and were married in 1796 when Polly was probably about 15. Mastin was 20. Never found a marriage record, suspect they were spirited away to NC (just across the river) for a shotgun marriage. David died in 1801, Susannah burned his will (we think) and claimed the widow's share of David's considerable estate. Mastin (probably born Martin but never used the right name) moved to another area of Halifax County and built a stagecoach inn with a bar and a racetrack. He raised a lot of tobacco and made a lot of money. He and Polly had lots of kids. Eventually Susannah died and Mastin was appointed executor of Davids's estate in 1815. I descend from mastin's youngest son, William Jefferson Powell. North central North Carolina is populated with descendants of mastin's other kids, particularly his first-born, Carter Glass Powell who was a prolific planter in Caswell county.
Would like to exchange information with other descendants of Mastin's grandfather, Edward Powell of halifax County VA.

Richard Carter is shown in records as donating supplies which include many casks of Brandy, during the Revolutionary War. There is a Chancery Suit between Waddill Carter's Widow Mildred Wade (Lewis) which is about the proceeds of the earnings from the still. I thought it interesting that the source of the Brandy donated by Richard is now known to have come from his father's still, which was also owned by Richard's brother, Waddill. - mfe
