William Henry Atteberry, the able and efficient clerk of Hart county, has had a splendid record as a public official and stands deservedly high in the esteem and confidence of his fellow citizens. He was born in Munfordville, Hart county, on the 3d day of September, 1886, and is a son of James R. and Matilda (Reynolds) Atteberry. His father, who was born in Hart county and died in Munfordville in January 1889, was a schoolteacher by profession, was a member and steward of the Methodist Episcopal church South and supported the democratic party. He was a son of J. L. and Elizabeth (Sidebottoms) Atteberry, the former of whom was a native of this state and died in Hart county. He was a farmer by occupation and was a democrat in his political belief. A member of the Methodist Episcopal church South, he served many years as a class leader and was one of the organizers and builders of the Old Camp Ground Methodist Episcopal church, near Bonnieville, Hart county. His wife was born in Green county, this state, and died at Camp Ground. The paternal [great] grandfather of W. H. Atteberry was Richard Atteberry, who was a native of South Carolina, while his wife was born in Kentucky, both dying in Hart county, of which locality he was a pioneer farmer, there becoming successful and prominent. Matilda Reynolds, mother of W. H. Atteberry, was born in Green county, Kentucky, and is now living in Munfordville. She is the daughter of Daniel T. Reynolds and Cassandra Jane (McCubbin) Reynolds. Her father was born at Pittsylvania Court House, Virginia, in 1830, and died in Hart county, Kentucky in March, 1908. He became a shoemaker, which trade he followed throughout his life. He served in the Federal army during the Civil war and was wounded in battle, from the effects of which he was an invalid throughout his life. He was an active member of the Grand Army of the Republic, gave his support to the republican party and was an earnest member of the Baptist church. His parents, Joseph and Polly (Seymore) Reynolds, were natives of Virginia and died in Hart county, the mother at the advanced age of ninety-six years. Joseph Reynolds was a whig in politics and a member of the Baptist church. Jane McCubbin was born in Green county, Kentucky, and died in Munfordville in March, 1907.

William H. Atteberry attended the public schools and the Green River Collegiate Institute at Munfordville. For a number of years he was in the employ of the Illinois Central and Louisville & Nashville railroads and at the time he resigned was assistant cashier of the former road at Louisville. He served five years as deputy county clerk under E. E. Biggs and was then appointed postmaster by President Wilson, and at the end of his first term was reappointed, serving seven and a half years, from April, 1914, to October 27, 1921, when he resigned. On November 7, 1921, Mr. Atteberry was elected county clerk of Hart county by a majority of one hundred and eighty-five votes, and in November, 1925, was reelected by a majority of eleven hundred and thirty, and is still the incumbent of the office, the duties of which he is discharging in a manner that has won the praise and commendation of his fellowmen.

On December 12, 1912, in Munfordville, Kentucky [Jeffersonville, Indiana] Mr. Atteberry was married to Miss Dora Bretice [Beatrice] Brashear, who was born near Bowling Green, Kentucky, March 16, 1896, and is a daughter of Samuel T. and Elizabeth (Self) Brashear. Her father, who is a successful merchant in Munfordville, was born and reared in Hart county. He is a republican in politics and while living in Indiana served as a justice of the peace. He is an adherent of the Baptist church. His wife is a native of Munfordville. Samuel T. Brashear is a son of William Brashear, who was a lifelong resident of Hart county. He served in the Union army during the Civil war, afterwards followed farming, and gave his political support to the republican party, while his religious faith was that of the Methodist Episcopal church. Elizabeth Self is a daughter of Green and Elizabeth [Miriam Belle] (Wilkerson) Self, both of whom were natives of Hart county and died here. Green Self followed the vocation of farming, voted the republican ticket and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. His father, G. M. C. Self, fought in the Mexican war and during the Civil war was a lieutenant in the Union army. Mrs. Atteberry, who was educated in the graded and high schools of Munford [Munfordville], is an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church South and of the Order of the Eastern Star in Munfordville. To Mr. and Mrs. Atteberry have been born six children, as follows: Frances Mildred, born May 29, 1914; Elizabeth Jane, born March 7, 1916; Dora Beatrice, who was born in August, 1918, and died in November, 1919; William Henry, Jr., February 13, 1920; Ethel Langley, May 2, 1923; and James Samuel, Mary 30, 1926.

Mr. Atteberry has always given his political support to the democratic party and has been deeply interested in public affairs. During the World war he served as director of supplies for all the Liberty Loan campaigns and acted as secretary during the third loan drive. He is a member of Green River Lodge, No. 88, A. F. & A. M.; Green River Chapter, R. A. M.; Glasgow Commandery, K. T.; Kosair Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S. at Louisville; the Woodmen of the World and the Knights of the Maccabees. He is also secretary and treasurer of the National Farm Loan Association and secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. A man of vigorous mentality, a high sense of honor and of energetic nature, throughout his career he has brought to the discharge of every duty a determination to give his very best efforts and his consistent life and cordial and friendly manner have gained for him a high place among the influential men of his community.

I am very interested in the Frances Shelton/Parnham Seymore family. I believe they were the parents of Mary "Polly" Seymore who married Joseph Reynolds in Pittsylvania Co, VA.

Joseph and Polly came to Hart County in 1844. They were the parents of 4 children: Daniel T. Reynolds who married Cassandra McCubbin; Thomas F. Reynolds; Mary J. Reynolds; and Martha S. Reynolds as per census records. Polly lived to be about 96 and I have located her death notice.

Daniel T. Reynolds and Cassandra were the parents of 3 daughters: Matilda Jane Reynolds who married James Robert Atteberry; Mary Frances; and Sarah

Joseph married Mary 'Polly' Seymore 11 Aug 1825, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Mary was born Abt 1805, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; died Yes, date unknown. [Group Sheet]

  2. 3.  Mary 'Polly' Seymore was born Abt 1805, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; died Yes, date unknown.
    Children:
    1. 1. Daniel T. Reynolds was born 1830, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; died Yes, date unknown.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Jesse of Culpepper Reynolds was born 16 Feb 1754, Culpepper Co., Virginia (son of William of Culpeper Reynolds and Martha Cole); died 26 May 1834, Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

    Notes:

Jessey is the spelling found in William's Will. 'Jesse'
is found on marriage bonds and other documents.
All of these families lived in the southeastern quadrant
    of Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
Of the large family of William and Martha Reynolds, only
one son remained in this county {Pittsylvania} to carry on the name. This was Jesse. He had eight daughters who were married in Pittsylvania County.

    page 118.
1112 Jesse Reynolds, son of David Reynolds, [incorrect! his father is William as shown in Jesse's Application for Benefits] b.1754,[ic:16 May 1754] who m. Sarah [Brown]-. He served in the Rev. War with the Va. State Line(AG 50152) and then settled in Henrico County, Va and then Pittsylvania Co.,VA. Mrs. Reynolds d.7-15-1840. Issue:John David [no evidence of son, John David]; Elizabeth who m. 8-14-1819 Champness Evans; Patsey, who m.7-26-1810 Samuel Blair; Nancy who m.9-28-1803 Frederick Brown; Sarah, who m.8-8-1810 David Evans; Judith, who m.9-22-1803 Samuel Matherly; Mary, who m. 1-17-1816 Jesse Pearman; Anne who m.3-16-1812 William Shackleford; Da[n]iel, who m.10-16-1822 Polly Bradley, and settled in NC; Milley, who m.10-12-1810 Vincent Brown.

Note: Much of the Tillman Record of the Pittsylvania Reynolds has been proven to be incorrect; it seems his assistant was a secretary in the Reynolds Family Association and this Patrick County line is descended from Christopher Reynolds. The Pittsylvania Reynolds line is descended from the Reynolds of Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania or in the Pennsylvania/Maryland region. Evidence of the connection of this William Reynolds of Culpepper and Hugh Reynolds of Muddy Run, Lancaster Pennsylvania has NOT been located to my knowledge. -mary frances reynolds

Jesse bought the land his father, William left to his
brothers, Joseph and Richard Cole, in 50 acre parcels in
1794 after the death of William in 1791.

Jesse married Sarah Brown 23 Jun 1777, Culpepper Co., Virginia. Sarah (daughter of John Brown and Joan Mrs. John Brown) was born Abt 1760, Culpepper Co., Virginia; died 15 Jul 1840, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. [Group Sheet]

Sarah Brown is named as the wife of Jesse Runnals in the Application for Benefits of Jesse Runnals.

    Name:
No doubt in my mind that Sarah Brown, wife of Jessee Reynolds, is related to her daughter, Nancy's husband's family. Nancy's husband, Frederick Brown (Frederick, John, John)is the grandson of John, probably the father of Sarah Brown who married Jesse Reynolds (Runnals). Jesse and his father lived in Culpepper Co., Virginia, before relocating to Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.
