As a result, she was instrumental in the development of the Welsh Mountain clinic. In 1975, she was given an award in appreciation of her dedication and service to the Welsh Mountain Medical Center. She was also awarded the distinguished Benjamin Rush Award in 1978 for her outstanding health services. Upon retiring from the VNA, she became involved with the Blind Association.

Both Doris and Dick were active in their church, Zion Lutheran Church, Leola. Their hobby was going to auctions; they loved antique-ing, a good pinochle game and being with their friends and family.

She was the beloved mother of Doris Jean "DoJe" Weaver, Fredericksburg, Va. and Dr. Delaine Madeline "Demi", married to Dr. Stephen Mandell, Lower Gwynedd, Pa. She was the loving "Nanni" to four grandchildren; Dr Kelli married to Dr. Jeff Slunt, Jennifer married to Chris Kinzer, David married to Alison Cooper and Sarah Mandell and six great-grandchildren; Todd and Madeline Slunt, Rebecca Kinzer, and Michael, Max and Alexandra Mandell.
