Lake Kiowa - Wadie H. McCain, 81, of Lake Kiowa, formerly
of Denton, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Denton Regional
Medical Center, Flow Rehabilitation Center.
Service was 1 a.m., today, Tuesday, Feb. 1, in Geo. J.
Carroll & Son Funeral Chapel in Gainesville with the Rev.
David Dinneen officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery,
Gainesville.
Pallbearers were Robert Taylor, David Leeth, Bobby Davis,
Matt McCain, Ray McCain and Nickless Devin.
Mrs. McCain was born Oct. 7, 1918, in Slidell to Garland
and Anna Anderson Weatherly. She married Dr. Jerry C.
McCain Dec. 27, 1939, in Marietta, Okla.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of Lake Kiowa; daughter, Ann
Bennett of Lake Kiowa; sons, Ward McCain of Austin, Mike
McCain of Lake Kiowa and Mark McCain of Plano; five
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; sister, Ora
Lee Leeth of Stephenville; and stepsister, Verna Evans of
Richardson. Her parents are deceased.

Merle McMurtry
Funeral services for Merle McMurtry, 83, will be at 11 a.m.
Monday in College Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Don
Robertson, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery by Lemons Funeral Home.
Mr. McMurtry died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 1998, in
Methodist Hospital Plainview.
He was born Jan. 1, 1915 in Silverton and moved with his
parents to northwest Briscoe County near Vigo Park in April
of 1917. He graduated from Tulia High School in 1933 and
from Texas Tech in 1938 with a degree in animal husbandry.
He was a four-year high-point man in the School of
Agriculture and was a member of Alpha Chi Scholastic
Society.
He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War
II.
He joined Vigo Park Baptist Church at the age of 11, was
very active in the church and helped build the present
church building. He also was active in Bible distribution
through the American Bible Society.
He farmed and ranched in the Vigo Park area for many years,
was Briscoe County Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1963
and founding director of First State Bank in Tulia. He was
very interested in Indian tribes of New Mexico and Arizona,
particularly their community and religious lore, arts and
crafts.
He married Rosa Lie Brown in Plainview on July 3, 1974 and
moved to Plainview. Both of them continued their interest
in Indian arts and crafts and lifestyles. He gave many
programs and lectures on various Indian tribes throughout
the Panhandle and South Plains and especially enjoyed
making presentations to children.
Surviving are his wife; a sister, Betty Devin of Tulia; a
brother, Hoyse McMurtry of Lubbock; a niece, Kathryn
McMurtry Hunt of Tulia; four nephews, Lee Devin of Tulia,
Dr. T. Mac Devin of Clarendon, Allan McMurtry of Austin and
Dr. Steve McMurtry of Milwaukee, Wis.; and 25 cousins.
Pallbearers will be Lee Devin, Mac Devin, Allan McMurtry,
Steve McMurtry, James Brown and Mark Spain.
The family suggests memorials to The American Cancer
Society, Boys Ranch or a favorite charity.
