The Alexander Jr. in Powhatan in 1784 could very well be the Alexander who shows up in Prince Edward. Here?s what I?ve found out about Alexander Trent of Prince Edward.

Alexander Trent married Francis McTaggart in Prince Edward on Jan. 9, 1790. Personal property tax lists show he became a resident of the county that year and lived there until his death in 1815.

In 1799, Alexander Trent bought 120 acres on Vaughan?s Creek. He added another 25 acres in 1801.

Alexander Trent married a second time in 1808, wedding Jensey Carter. In the 1810 census, the couple is listed with two males under 10, two males and two females age 10 to 16 and one female 16 to 26.

Alexander?s sons were likely Littleberry Trent (who I think was also called Alexander) and Josiah Trent. (Littleberry?s will identifies Josiah as his brother). Daniel Trent may have been Alexander?s son, as well. There was Henry Trent who owned land in the part of Prince Edward that is now in Appomattox County. I?m not sure where he came from. (His wife was Phebe.) Also showing up in Prince Edward records are Thomas Trent of Buckingham and his sons, Thomas Jr. and William.

(My guess is that Littleberry Trent is the Alexander Trent who married Mary Hix in 1819. Several records identify Littleberry?s wife as Mary, and I haven?t found any marriage records for a Littleberry Trent. So he was probably named Alexander Littleberry Trent.)

1790-1815 -- Prince Edward -- Alexander Trent appears on personal property lists. He is the only Trent on the list until 1812, when he is joined by Josiah Trent, and 1814, when William Trent also appears. (In 1816, he is replaced by Jane Trent.) In 1813, he is referred to as Alexander Trent Sr. He is taxed for a single white male except in 1812, when he is taxed for two white males. He is taxed for one slave in 1806, 1812, 1813 and 1814 and two slaves in 1815. He is usually taxed for livestock, though in 1791, 1793 and 179 (Prince Edward County, Va., Personal Property Tax Lists, Virginia State Library.)

August 1795 -- Prince Edward -- Hearing in case of Alexander Trent against Christopher Holland and John Cheadle for debt. (Prince Edward County, Va., Order Book 11 (1793-1797), p. 285.)

March 1796 -- Prince Edward -- Jury rules in favor of Alexander Trent in suit against Christopher Holland and John Cheadle. Defendants to pay 69 pounds or settle debt of 34/13/6 pounds with interest since Dec. 15, 1793. (Prince Edward County, Va., Order Book 11 (1793-1797), p. 371.)

Sep 21, 1801 -- Prince Edward -- James and Elizabeth Dungee of Prince Edward sell Ellexander Trent of Prince Edward, for 10 pounds, 25 acres adjacent the said Ellexander Trent "Zaphin Mushack Boazes Dungee." No witnesses recorded. (Prince Edward County, Va., Deed Book 12, p. 157)

Apr 29, 1808 -- Prince Edward -- Alexander Trent marries Jensey Carter. (Prince Edward County Marriage Records)

1810 -- Prince Edward -- Census lists Alexander Trent, age 26-45, with a woman the same age, two males under 10, two males and two females age 10 to 16 and one female 16 to 26. He has one slave. (1810 Census, Prince Edward County, Va.)

1815 -- Prince Edward -- Prince Edward landowners include Alexander Trent (branch of Vaughans Creek, 15 miles west); Thomas Trent of Buckingham (Appomattox River, 25 miles northwest); William Trent Jr. (Appomattox River, 26 miles west) and William Patteson Jr. and Thomas Trent Jr. of Buckingham County (Appomattox River, 25 miles west.) (1815 Directory of Virginia Landowners, Roger C. Ward (Iberian Publishing Co., Athens, Ga., 1997)

Dec 18, 1815 -- Prince Edward -- Inventory of estate of Alexander Trent returned. His estate includes livestock (cattle, sheep, hogs and horses) and household items. Inventory's bonds & debts due includes "Josiah & Jno. Trent, bond, $30." The administrator of the estate is Sheriff Saml Baldwin. (Prince Edward County, Va., Will Book 5, p. 45.)

1816-1818 -- Prince Edward -- Jane Trent, apparently the widow of Alexander Trent, appears on personal property tax lists in 1816-1818. She is taxed only for a horse and has no white male tithes. (A Jane Trent reappears in the lists from 1829 until 1831. In 1832, Jane R. Trent married Samuel Baldwin. Is this Alexander?s widow?) (Prince Edward County, Va., Personal Property Tax Lists, Virginia State Library.

May 10, 1817 -- Prince Edward -- Account of the estate of Alexander Trent includes payments to Josiah Trent of 8/8/6 and 9/0/0. (Prince Edward County, Va., Will Book 5, p. 190.)

Jan 4, 1819 -- Prince Edward -- Robert Hill, Robert Kelso and Richard Omohundro, commissioned appointed by the county to convey and sell a tract belonging to the estate of Alexander Trent, sell to Poval Carter, for $318, 158 1/2 acres on Vaughans Creek, bounded by Thomas Mitchell, James Dungey, James McNeal and Sam'l Baldwin. The deed mentions ".. the widow of sd Alexander Trent, her dower in said land ...", but doesn?t give her name. (Prince Edward County, Va., Deed Book 16, p. 416)

Apr 22, 1836 -- Prince Edward -- Will of Littleberry Trent written. He leaves his estate to his wife, Mary Trent, during her life, and after her death to be divided among his eight children: Francis Ann, Martha E., Mary E., Ann E., Lucy J., William H., Littleberry and Sarah M. Trent. His brother, Josiah Trent, is appointed executor. Witnessed by Joseph Todd, John Stevens, Edwin Hendson(?), Henry Thweatt and James D. Wood. A codicil adds wife Mary Trent as co-executor with brother Josiah. The will is executed Sept. 19, 1836. (Prince Edward County, Va., Will Book 7, p. 471.)
