Chancery Court Case 1857-001 William F. Scott (1814-167) was the son of Samuel Scott and Elizabeth Biggers/Biggars AND the grandson of Revolutionary War veteran William F. Scott and Mary Baker.
In an 1832 application for a pension for his service during the Revolutionary War, William F. Scott stated that he was born on the 3rd of December 1757 in Ireland. Supporting evidence and place of birth; the family Bible in his possession.
In 1850, William F. Scott (1814-1867) household included Mary Meadows born in 1776. A recorded visitor to this household was Mary Meadows' niece, Mary J. Meadows Tatum. Mary J. was the daughter of Austin and Mary Meadows. Austin and Mary) were a member of Briery Church and the children of James Meadows.
Footnote: Samuel Scott and Elizabeth Biggers had three children: William F. Scott 1814-1867 (children via Betsy Lyle source: Will), Samuel J. Scott (b, abt 1818) who married Frances J. Watson (daughter of Jesse Watson and Mary Meredith) and Louisa Henry Scott (1811-1831) who married James Whitehead (John Whitehead II and Martha "Patty" Baker).

At long last, here's my "book report" on what I found in Salt Lake
last month.
In the Joseph Smith Building library (not the main Family History
Center building) I found a hardbound book titled "The Biggers Family"
by Jeanette Kathleen Biggers Daniels, AG (and I believe she has a PhD
in something). There is no date, nor publisher. But according to
the stamp on the front of the book, the FHC microfilmed it May 24,
1993. And handwritten on the front page is a note from Jeannette
Daniels that says, "This book is donated through Know Your Heritage,
a non-profit historical organization. This book may be used by any-
one researching the Biggers family but may not be reproduced for
profit. This research was sponsored by Jeannette Kathleen Biggers
Daniels and Dr. Eugene Morrison" (to whom she dedicates the book).
The Table of Contents says:
Introduction
The Family in Scotland
The Family in Ireland
The Family in America
Sources
for the Scottish and Irish Sections
for the American Section
Index for the American Section
Index for the Irish Section
Index for the Scottish Section
The above covers 113 pages (which are numbered), then there are 114
more pages (not numbered) which list various sources in Ireland,
pedigree chart of the author's line, blank (?) Family Group Sheets,
a picture section, some life stories of various Biggers, and a copy
of a page of the 1820 Mecklenburg Co VA census and two copies about
a Joseph Bigger's Revolutionary War pay.
When we chatted, Jeanette said that while researching this family,
she discovered the surnames "Biggers" and "Fleming" were basically
interchangeable in the very early years (like during the 1100s-1600s
in Scotland). And she also said that the tartans for these two
surnames are IDENTICAL, to this date. Apparently the BIGGERS
originally came from Flanders, the county/area/province in Belgium.
They went on to Scotland where they were kind of known as the
Flemish Biggers, or Fleming Biggers.
She especially mentioned an Alexander FLEMING, off the top of her
head, and said that c1650 he went directly from Scotland to VA,
possibly to Westmoreland Co., she couldn't recall, AND THAT he was
called "Alexander SCOTT" in those early days in VA.
>From my understanding, the area where the Flemish people went to
in Scotland is today's town of "Biggars". I found it in the atlas--
teeny town located at 55.38N 3.32W, south of and between Glascow and
Edinburgh.
The first Bigger that is discussed is Baldwin (Baldwin Flamingus of
Biggar) b c1100. "He was a Flemish leader who obtained a grant of
lands of Biggar from David I (b c1080 d 1153). Baldwin was the
first landowner of Biggar that records can be found for. He was
the Sheriff of Lanarkshire, Scotland." She also notes that, "All
Scottish information comes from "Bigger and the House of Fleming,"
by William Hunter unless otherwise stated. This book can be found
in the Genealogical Society." I'm not sure which "Genealogical
Society" she's referring to though.
I'm not going to go through the lineage all those "ancient" people,
but some of the names are interesting, coming forward in time:
Hugh of Biggar, Robert of Biggar, Sir Malcolm Fleming of Biggar,
Robert Fleming, Robert Fleming of Biggar, William Flandrensis of
Biggar, Patrick Fleming, Fleming of Bigger, Elizabeth Fleming,
Alexander Fleming, David Fleming. Notice how the "Biggar/Bigger"
gets dropped and "Fleming" comes into being? I find this to be an
extremely important point we should keep in mind during our own
research.
Another source Jeanette cites is "The Complete Peerage," but I
could not find where she may have listed an author's name.
{I am going to give several lines of BIGGERS which are not ours,
just to provide some overall information on the surname. Plus
I've found it often helps in research to be able to eliminate
"them" from "us," when trying to sort out our own particular line
from a bunch of people who all have the same last name but not
all are blood kin.}
The next section of the book is "The Family in Ireland." It seems
there were three or four brothers: Michael, John, James, and
probably William BIGGER. The first three were all b 1610s-1620 in
Scotland. Next listed are many other BIGGERs of this same genera-
tion who cannot be connected to the brothers. All these people
are b, m + d in Ireland, many in County Antrim. Some of them came
to America in the 1800s.
Next section is "The Family in America": the first family men-
tioned is that of Matthew BIGGER b c1700-1710s, m Martha, d Ireland.
The widow, Martha BIGGER, went to the US in 1773, where she d and
is buried at Candor, PA. Six ch are listed for Matthew and Martha,
all being b c1720s-1730s Ireland and all coming to America: 1-Samuel
m#1 Abigail WILSON m#2 Nancy DENNISON; 2-John; 3-Elizabeth, 4-James,
5-Jane, 6-Thomas. No info is given on where they settled.
The next family discussed consists of three brothers, Joseph,
William, and John BIGGER.
1. "Joseph BIGGER b 1722 Antrim Co Ireland. Some
researchers have believed that this Joseph Bigger
lived in Prince Edward Co, VA for a while before
coming to the North and South Carolina border.
There are no records to show that this is the path
that he took. I believe that this tradition started
because there was a Biggers family living in Prince
Edward Co, VA at the time that Joseph came to America.
That family has been traced to another Biggers family
that came to America in the 1600s. If there is a
relationship, it would be very remote and back in
Scotland many generations ago. Joseph m Sarah --.
Some have suggested that her last name was HARRIS
and others claim BARBER. ([author's] NOTE: I have
never seen any proof for either of these last names.)
She appears to have been about 20 years younger than
Joseph was. He d 1786 in York Co, SC. Sarah d 1811
in Williamson Co, TN."
Twelve pages of Joseph's descendants come next, which is Jeanette's
line.
2. "William BIGGER came to America from Ireland in the
1750s. He landed in Pennsylvania according to family
tradition but left immediately for Prince Edward Co, VA.
He did not stay there long either but went to NC. He
arrived there about 1762-64. He moved with other close
relatives. He was born c1713 in Ulster, County Antrim,
Ireland and died in 1780. He m Sarah JULIAN who was
b 1717 or 1720 in Ulster."
Five pages of William's descendants follow.
3. "John BIGGER b 1720. He m Mary PORTER. He d 1766. She
d after 1775. She was on a land record with her son,
Matthew, in Mecklenburg Co., NC in 1775."
About six pages of John's descendants are listed.

Notes:
Married:
Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Haynes, of Warwick [In his patent of 1657 the immigrant Miles Cary names Thomas Haynes as one of the head rights, in company with his own wife, and his proven kinsman Roger Daniel, so that it is possible that he was also of kin to the Haynes in Bristol. Thomas Haynes appears in the Virginia Quit Rent Rolls 1704 as one of the largest landholders in Warwick, and as J. P. in 1714 (Va. Mag., ii, 13). Another Thomas Haynes, probably a nephew of this Elizabeth Cary was a member of the Warwick Committee of Safety in 1774. See W. & M. Quar., v, 250.]
