    Hi Mary Frances,
Thank you for responding to me. That telephone call to FTDNA got your family tree up on my old computer within two days. And today my husband installed a new computer for me. I expect this one will not take so long to process documents.

You are the first match I have been able to make with the two hundred something relatives that I have gotten on Family Finder. I am not counting my match with second or third cousin, Tamara Booth, whose mother was an Eanes because I knew her before she took the test.

You are the sixth cousin that Tamara and I share in common, so your possibility of being an Eanes is a probability. Tamara has two sets of great and greater grandparents who were Eanes cousins, so she really has the Eanes DNA.

Have you seen the Eanes Genealogy Book compiled by Col. Richard Henry Eanes? I did meet him when I was in college in the mid 1960s, and I attended his burial in Arlington National Cemetery circa 1985. I am awed by the work he put into this research before computers were able to assist us. He must have spent most of his vacations in Virginia Courthouses.

My gr gr grandfather, Henry Woodson Eanes, was the brother of James Lee Starling Eanes. That would make you a fourth cousin to me on that line. Oscar Starling Eanes was the son of John Hubbard Eanes and Joyce Washington Johnston. He lived from July 8, 1876 - Sept. 11, 1952. He married Rebecca Martha Hankins (Sept. 7, 1884 - April 8, 1955) in Dec. 1900. They had nine children. They lived their entire lives in Henry Co. I also have a Hankins ancestress who married James Cox. So we share some DNA on that line.

John was the son of James Lee Starling Eanes and Lena Susanna Brown. He was born 1851 and died Dec 6, 1934. Joyce Washington Johnston (March 18, 1847 - Feb 1919) was the daughter of Washington and Perlina Johnston. John and James appear together on the 1860 Henry Co Census. John and Joyce had five children.

James Lee Starling Eanes was the son of Henry Eanes and Sarah Eanes (first cousins). He was born 1816; died Aug 30, 1883. James and Lena (1818 - May 2, 1906) had seven chidlren. They lived on Turkey Cock Creek in Henry Co. Before moving to Henry Co, they lived in both Halifax and Pittsylvania.

Henry Eanes was the son of Edward Eanes and Jane Sublett (originally the name was Soblet). Jane was a descendant of a Huguenot refugee who settled at Manakintowne south of Richmond on the Huguenot Trail. His cousin and wife Sarah was the daughter of Arthur Eanes and probably Nellie Murray. Arthur's will lists "Eleanor" as his wife, but that could be the formal name for "Nellie." Both Edward and Arthur fought at the Battle at Guilford Court House in 1781. They obviously crossed the Dan River at Boyd's or Irvine's Ferry with General Nathaniel Green.

This Henry Eanes is the father of four known children. James Lee Starling and Edward (Ned) have the same age on the 1850 census (age 37), so they are probably twins. Henry was born in Charlotte Co.and died in Pittsylvania. A few years ago I visited a remote farm house where Desmond Kendrick told me he had seen old graves that were Eanes of this period, but we could not determine where any of the graves were located.

Edward and Arthur are the only known sons of Henry Eanes b.circa 1747 and died after 1796. and an Unknown Wife. This Henry inherited land in Chesterfield Co., but sold it and lived in Charlotte Co.

This Henry was the son of Henry Eanes of Henrico and Chesterfield counties and an Unknown Wife. Henry Jr. is the only known descendant of him, but surely there were other children.

Henry Sr. was the son of the immigrant, Edward Eanes of Chesterfield Co. who had land on Swift Creek and married Mary Vaden (probably another Huguenot name). It is now known that Edward Eanes came from England in 1714 with a company of Indentured Servants called The Young Men's Adventure. In the 1990s my husband and I checked the UK telephone directory for the Eanes surname. There were only two families with that surname: one in England, the other in Glasgow. Therefore, I figured that the surname was not English. Many of that name are found in the Castello Branco (White House) Province of Portugal. Gil Eanes was a famous Portuguese navigator, and Antonio R. Eanes was the President of Portugal in the 1970s. Both these men can be found on the Wikipedia. The portrait of Antonio Eanes looks just like my Uncle Curtis Oakes. I have a picture of my great grandparents, Thomas Jefferson Eanes and Nannie Alice Gray. TJE looks very Portuguese in my opinion.

Eanes can also be a Sephardic Jewish name.

This is all I currently know about the Eanes family. I will ask my husband to help me send some of the pages of the Eanes book to you.

As far as the Oakes are concerned. Your Daniel was the brother of my fifth great grandfather, William H. Oakes.

You are an X match to me. I do not know what that means.

Well, this is enough for one night.

I know we have a lot to learn.
