Remembered by Philip Franklin Carter that Edward Palmer Carter was a great friend of Carter Glass Powell.

      the newspaper date for Joe Carter's obit was December 9, 1940 and for Mildred's in the paper dated April 24, 1963. Services today For Joe Carter at Sandy Creek. Joe S. Carter, age 84. passed away at his home at Sutherlln yesterday
      morning at 8 o'clock after an illness of several months. He was born in Halifax County and had lived his entire life at Sutherlin where he
      was well I known. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Groom Carter and one son, Edward Carter, of Sutherlin, also Sutherlln, and a brother, James T. Carter. He was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church at which p-lace, his funeral was conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was to follow in Highland Burial Park.
      Mrs. Joe Carter Dies At Age 101
      Mrs. Mildred Groom Carter died in the Nichols Nursing Home at South Boston early this morning at the age of 101- after having been in declining health for several years. A native of Pittsylvnia County, she was born Nov. 28, 1861, a daughter of the late Calvin Groom and Mrs. Mary Martin Groom. Mrs, Carter lived most of her life at Sutherlin, and was a member of the Sandy Creek Baptist Church. Her husband, Joe S. Carter,
      died Dec. 8 1940. She is survived by one son, E.P. Carter, of the home at Sutherlin, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2 o' clock from Townes Memorial Chapel, and interment will be in Highland Burial
      Park. The remains will rest at Townes Funeral Home and the family wil1 be at the residence at Sutherlin.
