      > Hi Stephanie!
      >
      > As I mentioned to you, I believe, I am the co-administrator of the Guthrie Project at FamilyTreeDNA. My immediate group in the project is Group 8A, Halifax County, VA. We are descendants of Thomas Guthrie (who left his will in that county in 1786) and wife, Mary Cason.
      >
      > Andrew Garland "Andy" Carter is a Carter by name only and, genetically, a Guthrie. There are several ways that could have happened but adoption is the usual method. I compared Andy's 37 marker DNA profile to mine and we match 35 of 37 genetic markers.; an indication at that level that we are of the same family. Most of the members of Group 8A have tested at the 111 marker level so it is hard to make a call on Any Carter. Occasionally, people have matches at 37 markers and fall completely away by the 67 marker level. I hate to ask people to spend more money on these projects but in this case, Andy really needs to advance his Y-DNA evaluation to 67 markers and, if possible, ideally to the 111 marker level (the highest level). As you probably know, the higher the number, the more refined the discrimination. 37 markers would indicate that he is part of the Group 8A family but not of which branch. Testing at a higher levels would indicate the branch because the project has participants at all the known branches.
      >
      > Halifax County, Virginia is a very tricky slope for genealogists because there were three Guthrie lines in the county. Genetically, none of the three were related. Briefly (about 1820) there were FOUR Guthrie lines in the county but the short term individual married a woman there, remained for a short while, and then left for parts unknown.
      >
      > If you are in contact with a small group of Andy's Carter descent, maybe you all can get together and have Andy's Y-DNA profile increased so that we can determine your origins with the branches. Some stayed in Halifax, some went to Kentucky, some to Tennessee, and some to Mississippi. I suspect you have Carter research and it is certainly good back to when the name change took place. I would put the deep Carter research on pause for the time being until we get this connection done.
      >
      > I think Andy has signed up for Family Finder and it would be in progress by now. Had I known earlier, I would have advised him not to do that testing because of its usefulness or lack thereof. In his case, the money would have been better spent upgrading his Y-DNA.
      >
      > See if you can get some participation to move up Andy's profile since there appears to be several of you that would share the same descent. Financially, he may be able to do the higher testing himself but it's always good to have a back-up plan.

HOT OFF THE PRESSES, THESE ARE MY LATEST Y-DNA RESUILTS AT THE TOP TESTING LEVEL OF 111 MARKERS.
THANKS TO DR. STEVEN CARTER OF GREENWOOD, SC FOR UPGRADING HIS FATHER JOE'S SAMPLE.
Y-DNA IS CONSISTENTLY MAINTAINED FOR THE FIRST TWO WIVES OF JAMES THOMAS CARTER JR. (CAROLINE WESLEY & ELIZA HILL) INDICATING THAT JAMES THOMAS CARTER JR. IS, GENETICALLY, A GUTHRIE AND ALL FORWARD DESCENDANTS ARE GUTHRIES. AS THE SAYING GOES, A CARTER BY NAME ONLY. MORE RESEARCH IS REQUIRED TO DETERMINE WHEN THE INTRUSION OCCURRED BUT THIS LATEST NEWS VERIFIES THAT IT DID OCCUR AND THAT SPANNING TWO FAMILY UNITS, WITHOUT CHANGE, IS PROOF POSITIVE THAT ANDY'S INITIIAL RESULTS FROM EARLIER THIS YEAR WERE SPOT-ON. THE CARTERS FROM WHICH ALL OF YOU DESCEND HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN GUTHRIES, AT LEAST FROM THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY UNTIL PRESENT DAY.

Ronald Burton Guthrie (Ron) lives in Ontario, Canada. His great-grandfather, James D. Guthrie, was a tobacco buyer for some of the larger tobacco manufacturers and worked the markets in and around Danville, Virginia. In 1924, he was offered the opportunity to work the Canadian tobacco markets as a buyer and he went there after the close of the American markets that year. He liked Canada and never came back. Ron has a documented paper trail to his great-grandfather, James D. Guthrie (born 1875, Halifax Co., VA.) to Alexander Guthrie to James H. Guthrie to Ephraim Guthrie to Cason Guthrie to Thomas Guthrie I (died and left will in 1786, Halifax Co., VA.).
