      Chancery Cause Theodorick Carter and Charles Farrar: Carter says he paid a note made by Charles Farrar to Robert K. Watkins for land purchased by Farrar. The bargain appeared to be if Carter would pay the Bond for him, then Farrar would give Carter Title to 3/5th of the Land. Farrar failed to deliver said Title; hence Chancery Suit. Winston Davis testified he was present when the deal was made and confirmed Theodorick's account of the transaction.

      Temple Davis testifies that the deal was made at the funeral of Mr. [Charles] Farrar's wife's [Mary Fore] mother, Sukey Fore, he being present, after her death on the 12th day of January 1842. [NOTE Charles Farrar and Mary [Fore] Farrar named a daughter Susannah Farrar and she married John Fore] Question: State what you heard the Defendant Farrar say in conversation with Carter, the plaintiff about this land trade and when? Answer: Sometime in the fall 1840 after Mr. Carter returned from Missouri, Mr. Carter and M. Farrar the Defendant were in conversation at my house about this land trade. Mr. Carter related the bargain between him and Farrar" stating that he, Carter had agreed to take in and pay off the land bond executed by Charles W. Farrar for the 3/5 of land embraced in the tract of 157 acres with the interest on said bond. Said bond being for the sum of one hundred and forty nine dollars and then in possession of Robt K. Watkins. Farrar replied and said "that is our bargain and I now agree to it and when you take in what bond given by me for the land from R.K. Watkins, I will then make you good and lawful right to said land.......

      Identification of Charles Farrar mentioned in the above action;

      Charles Farrar, Sr. was born on 06 Dec 1758 in Kings James Parish Northam, Goochland, Co. and was baptized at Dover Episcopal Church, 15 Jan 1759 (see Douglas Register, p92).

      Charles Farrar, Sr. married Mary Fore, the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Woodson) Fore of Prince Edward Co., VA, probably at Charlotte Co. about 1778. Peter Fore's will dated 31 Jan 1812 and probated in Charlotte Co., VA on 06 Nov 1816 mentions his daughter, Mary Farrar.

      It appears that Charles Farrar, Sr. moved from Goochland Co., VA to Charlotte Co., VA between 1777-1782 as the 1782 census of heads of families in Charlotte Co., lists him there. The tithe lists of Charlotte Co. includes Charles Farrar in 1783 as tithe payer and head of family and his wife, Mary, as head of family in 1784 and later years.

      The extant will of Charles Farrar, Sr., probated 03 May 1784 (Bk. 1, p351) in Charlotte Co., VA, states that his wife is pregnant and if with a boy, he is to share in the division of the "land". This unborn child was Charles Farrar, Jr. who was born following his father's death.

      Charles Sr.'s wife, Mary, died in Pamplin, Appomattox, Co., VA in 1832. Apparently, she lived out her life at the Charles Farrar home on Horsepen or Little Cub Creek near Pamplin, VA. The inventory of her estate was dated 09 Nov 1832 and included furniture and livestock (Bk. 7, p95).

      The children of Charles and Mary (Fore) Farrar were:
      1) Josiah Farrar, b. Charlotte Co., VA, Abt. 1780; m. Martha T. Hill on 13 Apr 1816 at Prince Edward Co., VA.
      2) Susannah Farrar, b. Charlotte Co., VA, Abt. 1782; m. John Fore on 09 Jun 1803.
      3) Charles Farrar, Jr. (see below).
      The author of a valuable Farrar genealogical source book descended from Charles Farrar, Sr. He was George Edward Pankey (1903-1999) who published "John Pankey of Manakin Town, Virginia, and his Descendants" Vol. I, 1969; Vol. II, 1972 and Vol. III, 1981.
