      Grandma Kirby is dead
Grandma Kirby, died at the home of her son Mr. John Kirby of Prospect Hill. Her old home was with her son, Mr. G. C. Kirby, but for several years she has been staying around with all her children. But since the illness of her daughter, Mrs. J.H. Wilson, she has been staying with her and near her two sons, Mr. Ben and John Kirby.

Grandma left us on late Saturday afternoon was was taken sick on the following morning. She was confined to her bed for just a few days. She did not suffer. She always had that sweet smile on her face. Grandma always had been blessed with good health, and she could read as good as anyone and never wore glasses. The Sunday before she died she had just arose an was sitting on the bedside talking to her daughter who had arrived from Virginia. She was glad to see her. She had seen her for several years, and all of at once Grandma could not speak and they would talk with her but she couldn't say a word. She was struck speechless and from then on she just kept getting weaker. Every thing that could be done was done for her but the icy hand of death could not be staid.

Grandma was born in VIrginia near Halifax, Oct 19, 1839 and died on Aug 15, 1926, making her almost 87 years old. She was the oldest member of the Clement Missionary Baptist church, near her old home. She gave her heart to God when she was 16 years old and was a devout member of the Clement church. To this church she was always a faithful member and in all circles of life she lived the life of a true Christian. There was not a day passed that she did not read her bible. She daily conversed with us and others about dying, always saying "I'm ready to go". Grandma would appreciate every kind deed and give praise of anything you did for her. One day she came and looked at mother and said: "Annie, don't you wish we were both in Heaven". We know grandma is there and at rest.

The funeral services were held at Clement church on Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Coggins, pastor of her church.

The floral tribute were many and beautiful and were carried by her granddaughters MIsses Vergie, Ethel, and Maude Wilson, Doris Gilliland and Mary Barnwell. She is survived by two brothers: Mr. George Carter of Virginia, Mr. Ed Carter of Semora, one sister, Mrs. Martha Lee of Durham; eight children Mr. Bill and John Kirby of Prospect Hill, Mr. Ben Kirby of near Carr, Mrs. M.F. Farmer of Semora, Mrs. C.F. Gilliland of Norfolk, Va, Mrs. Francis Kirby of Portsmouth Va, Mrs. J.H. Wilson of near Carr and thirty-one grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren and many loving friends and relatives. But grieve not dear relatives and loved ones for grandma is only sleeping. While there is mystery in her death, it will be reviled bye and bye, while we miss her on earth in that beautiful place she is by the good Shepherd's side and with rapture untold. He looks on her face, in her presence forever to abide. When our labour is done and our journey is over, we shall meet grandma by and by and the sadness of parting shall come never more in home that is over the sky.

Written by her granddaughter Vergie W
