      "Elijah Amiss was a prosperous and highly respected citizen of Rappahannock County (formerly Culpeper), owned large mills, and built a canal connecting with Falmouth to convey his grain to England. He had a large and distinguished family, three of his sons being surgeons in the Civil War with outstanding service.
