      Jo Ann -

I have been combing through your correspondences with Mike Hughes and his findings at the Presbyterian Cemetery in PEC (messages 5867 & 5868). His mention of John T. Carter and wife Bette M. Britewell rang familiar to me, so I went through some of my notes. Robert Edward Taylor, a descendant of John T. Carter and a professional genealogist living in Prince Edward County, Virginia, supplied me with the information that John T. Carter is the son of Wilson Carter of Prince Edward County. The descent down to Wilson Carter is as follows:
      1. Giles Carter of Henrico
      2. Giles Carter Jr. of Prince William County
      3. Povall Carter
      4. Daniel Carter of Cumberland
      5. Povall Carter
      6. Wilson Carter of PEC

According to Mr. Taylor's research, John T. Carter also had a brother named Samuel.
Since your Samuel Randolph Carter appears to be buried in the same plot as John T. Carter, I would think that they are brothers. Are you certain that the father of your Samuel Carter is John Carter? It would appear from Mr. Taylor's research that it is Wilson.
Wilson Carter is a cousin of Waddell Carter. Perhaps the name Wilson was misspelled in your line and became Wadell? I don't know. Let me have your thoughts.

Theoderick Carter, III ,great-great grandfather of Nathaniel H. Wooding, wrote a will dated July 1805, Book 7 page 152. He did not mention his homeplace.
Alexander Carter, a brother of Nathaniel Carter, wrote a Will dated January 11 1826. The following is extracted from it "At the death of my wife my will is that my lands consisting of three tracts, two in Halifax and one in Pittsylvania, shall be sold in the most advisable manner and the money arising from such sale together with my Negroes and every particle of my estate except my home, which was willed to me by my father ...... my home I give to my son Theoderick."
Samuel Carter's will dated February 1836 is in Will Book 17, page 597. Item 4,"I lend to my wife the tract of land whereon I live during her life and at her death I give to my son Philemon."
Philemon B. Carter sold to Thomas Haynie 100 acres of land for $2,250.00 on September 24, 1860. References ? the Description are to the Danville Road, Carter's Mill Road and Marable's Line fence. A 30 by 40- foot burial ground is reserved.
In Respect to Samuel Carter operating a Tavern in Court Orders Minute Book I, page 140, in year 1821, he is granted permission to keep a house of private entertainment. This permission was renewed a number of times.
Theoderick Carter, III was Commissioner of Revenue, Southern District, Justice of Peace 1782 and Sheriff. He was also great grandfather to Mrs. David Webb and to Miss Louise Haney's??? mother. This makes Dr. N. H. Wooding kin to [Giles Carter, Theodorick Carter2, Theodorick3, etc....
