      From "Let the Drums Roll":
James Turner, who was born about 1732, served as a captain of Virginia
Troops. His nephew, James Turner Smith, and Sylvester Chunn both
served under Captain James Turner. They fought in the Battle of
Guilford Courthouse, in which James Turner Smith was wounded. James
Turner's first wife was Miss Wyatt. He married his second wife, Sarah
Irby, in Halifax County, Virginia, June 27, 1779. A few years after
the war, Turner moved his family, including his aged mother, Keren
Hapuck Norman Turner, to Montgomery county, North Carolina. In 1806 he
moved with a large number of his relatives to Tennessee. They rented
some land on Mansker's Creek, near Nashville, raised two crops, and
then purchased land in Maury County, where some of the group had
already settled. James Turner and John Haywood purchased $12,470 worth
of land, a portion of which was in Maury County, April 5, 1809. He
died between that date and August 14, 1809 when his estate was divided
among his heirs. In 1811 two of his sons paid taxes on 820 acres of
land in Maury county and seventeen slaves. James Turner was the father
of four children who were living at the time of his death. The oldest
son was James Turner, Junior. The only daughter, Winnefred Turner, was
born April 17, 1775, married James T. Sanford and died in Maury
County, Tennessee, December 16, 1844. William Turner died in Maury
County prior to December 21, 1813, when an inventory of his personal
property was recorded. By January 14, 1815, William Turner's widow,
Nancy had married Dabney Wade. James Turner's youngest child was
Anthony Irby Turner, who was born before 1794. In 1820 he was listed
as the head of his household, which consisted of his wife and four
children under ten year of age. James Turner and his wife, Sarah Irby
Turner, were buried in the family graveyard on his property.
Unfortunately the rock wall surrounding this graveyard has collapsed
and covered whatever tombstones may have marked the graves of James
      Turner and his wife.

Captain in the Virginia Militia under General Greene. His mother,
Kerenhappuch, rode horseback from home to North Carolina and nursed
him (? or son-in-law or grandson) back from near fatal injuries
suffered at Guilford Battleground. She did the same for many others
both before and after and is one of just three Patriot Mothers to have
statues erected to them; hers is at Guilford Courthouse, North

From RECORDS OF CHARLES R. MOREHEAD, SENIOR OF LEXINGTON, MISSOURI
(his Grandfather Morehead married James & Kerenhappuch Turner's
      daughter Mary), 1915:
      >> James Turner married Miss Keren-Happuch Norman, and from them our
family relations had their origin. I have a recollection of my
great-grandmother Keren-Happuch Turner who died in North Carolina at
the advanced age of 115 years. James and Keren-Happuch Turner had as I
remember, one son and four daughters, namely: James, Sarah, Mary,
