In Reply to: Robert Carter & Sus: Evans/Ellis, 1772, Henrico/Goochland, Virginia by Holly Hampton of 21841

I have no firm position on the lineage of the Robert Carter married by Douglas in Goochland Co., Virginia in 1772. I do have proof however of the identity of the woman he married as Susannah Evans, daughter of Joseph Evans and Susannah Lacy.

The birth of a daughter named Susannah to Joseph Evans and Susannah Lacy on 23 Feb 1749 was recorded by Douglas in the St. James Parish Register on page 40. The LWT of Joseph Evans [GDB 13/200] was signed 28 Dec 1781 and proved 20 May 1782 in Goochland Co., Va. This will recites in part "Item. I lend to my daughter Susannah Carter one negro fellow named Ben, one feather bed and furniture during her life and at her death to be equally divided among her children to them and to their heirs forever." Executors named were Matthew Woodson and son Thomas Evans.

On 17 Oct 1803 a deed was recorded [GDB 18/601] that identifies the living legatees of Robert Carter who died intestate in Goochland Co., Va. Those names were: Susanna Carter, widow of Robert Carter deceased, William Thurman and Nancy his wife, Susanna Carter Junior, Sally Carter of the county of Goochland, Daniel Carter of the county of Fluvanna, William Wood and Martha his wife of the commonwealth of Kentucky, Polly Carter
      Amy Carter
Robert Carter, of the county of Goochland, by their the aforesaid Susanna Carter their guardian.
This deed recites in part "Witnesseth that whereas the said Robert Carter in his life time was seized and possessed of a certain tract, piece or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Goochland on the waters of Tuckahoe creek containing two hundred acres more or less and being so thereof sized and possessed departed this life intestate leaving the aforesaid Susanna Carter his widow and . . ."

On 17 Aug 1790 Robert Carter was deeded 189 acres on Tuckahoe Creek in Goochland Co., Va. by George Gordon and Sally Winn his wife. The price for this land was 189 pounds. George Gordon, at the time of the deed was in Fayette Co., Ky. The land was bounded by Robert Saunders, Drury Wood, Hezekiah Puryear and John Price. Robert Carter paid Gordon 50 pounds and was obligated to pay ?139 over a three year period. A deed of Trust [GDB 15/443] dated 18 Aug 1790, was granted to Matthew Woodson of Goochland for ?139 to insure the payments due to Gordon.

At the time of the purchase of land in 1790 Robert Carter was styled as of Goochland but I can find no indication of prior land ownership there. There are no entries of births or baptisms of children of Robert Carter in the Douglas Register of St. James Parish so it reasonable to assume that prior to the land purchase in 1790 Robert and Susannah resided elsewhere and since he was recorded by Douglas in his marriage entry as in Henrico that seems a likely residence.

We know that Poval Carter of Henrico County had a son Robert from his LWT recorded on page 1815 of Volume 4 of the Miscellaneous Records of Henrico Co., Va. This will recites " Item, I give & Bequeath this Land & houses where I now live after the death of my Wife to my son Robert to him & his heirs. " We also know that this Robert Carter was born after 1744 because he was under 21 years of age when in May 1765 Robert, orphan of Poval Carter, was bound out by Henrico Parish churchwardens. [HCOB 1763-1767/454]. This makes this Robert Carter of the appropriate age to be a candidate for the Robert Carter, in Henrico, to marry Susannah Evans in Goochland.
