Issue of William and Mary (Booker) Shapard, probably virtually all born in Cumberland Co., Va (Shapard was the definite preference in spelling of this branch of the Sheppard family.")
John S. Shapard the ninth child of William and Mary Shapard, born say 1782, married 1808, Person Co., NC, Elizabeth Vass, daughter of Philip and Elizabeth (Webb) Vass.
Mary Booker (James 3, James2 ______1) is the daughter of James Booker and his first wife (Elizabeth Hubbard") has been located since the article "The Booker Family of Petsworth Parish, Glouchester Co., VA and South Farnham Parish, Essex Co., VA" which appeared in this magazine, v.5, pp.51-64, was prepared for publication. Mary Booker married, William Shapard (Sheppard), son of Samuel and Mary Kavanaugh Sheppard, and grandson of Robert and Jessica (Hubard) sheppard.1 His brother Samuel Sheppard refers to him only as "my brother William who moved to North Carolina" and gives no further information. On 12 Oct 1762 "William Shepherd of the County of Essex bought a tract on the branches of Green Creek in Cumberland Co., VA, bounding on the land of John Woodson, from one Thomas Wright.2 On 27 June 1785 "William Shapard and Mary his wife and Samuel Shapard of the County of Cumberland" sold this tract to Richard Wilson.3 Thereupon William and Mary with the bulk of their family moved on down to Granville Co., NC and settled near Mary's Sister Amy (Booker) Webb......
