It appears that the present Carter families of Caroline are descended from William Carter, son of John Carter and Margaret Todd. Philip Carter, grandson of William Carter, m. a Miss Hackney in 1807 and had issue four sons and one daughter. His son Peter Carter married Sarah Hill and settled at ?Mt. Gideon? near ?North Wales,? and had issue: Edward, Hill, James and Mattie. (This paragraph appears to be garbled. See paragraph below taken from ?the Descendants of Capt Thomas Carter of ?Barford: Lancaster Co, Va with genealogical notes of many allied families by Miller, Joseph Lyon; published in 1912?my notes?Mark Royston) John Carter, Armistead Carter, Captain John Carter, of Caroline, served in the War of the Revolution. And in the War of 1812 the 30th Regiment, from Caroline, had seven Carters on its roll, namely: James Carter, James B Carter, Vicman Carter, Joseph Carter, Spencer M. Carter, Philip Carter and Charles Carter. The voters list for 1923 shows that Caroline had forty-one white voters bearing the name of Carter. The Descendants of Capt Thomas Carter of ?Barford: Lancaster Co, Va with genealogical notes of many allied families by Miller, Joseph Lyon; published in 1912 Philip Carter, who married Betsy Carter, Dec 14, 1803, was probably a younger son or grand son of William Carter, and is supposed to have been the same Philip Cater who married about 1807 a Miss Hackney. They are the ancestors of the present Carters in Caroline, and had issue: 11William Catter born circa 1808 12. Peter Carter, born in 1810 13. James Carter, born in 1812, died 1885 13.
