  Our Redman family is associated with Richmond, Columbia and Butts Counties, Georgia. Richmond was one of the initial counties created in 1777, with Wilkes to the north. In 1790, Columbia was created from Wilkes and Richmond. Further changes shrank these counties. Butts County is considerably to the south; it wasn't created till 1825. The marriage of Benjamin Redman and Elizabeth Morehead is recorded in the Redman Bible. It is said to have been in the possession of Cliett Redman, Jackson, GA, but I don't know when that was. My own source for what the bible says is Georgia DAR records, Vol. 43, pp. 866-867. The bible data is also given in Vol. 54, p. 32, but the two printed records don't agree in all the dates for the descendants of this couple. Apr 29, Bulloch Co., Ga. - Susannah Lewis, married Rowland Williams 1825 Jul 11, Roland, sells land to Benjamin Redman for William Redman. 1827 Feb 16, Deed - Rowland sold property to Benjamin Redman. (Note that Benjamin Redman died on 23 September of the next year.) The 1820 Census for Richmond County, GA, p. 235, lists Benjamin Redman, but the enumeration leaves him out: -1-1- - - - -1- -2- This means one male 10-16 one male 16-26 1 female 26-45 2 persons probably in commerce Five slaves are listed: - -2- - -21 There exists a separate FTM file for all the descendants I know of of George W. Redman and his brother William.The descendants of Benjamin and Elizabeth Morehead Redman are in a separate Family Tree Maker file called "Redman." At the time of this writing, the evidence for this Benjamin Redman consists of his marriage to Elizabeth Morehead and supposed entries in a Redman family bible. The great question, which might answer others, is how Elizabeth Morehead and Benjamin Redman came to marry. Her family was probably in Halifax County, Virginia, whence they removed to Richmond County, North Carolina. Unfortunately, the date of the removal isn't yet established. I have read that the earliest record of Elizabeth's father in Richmond County is about 1797. I think it is possible that some of Elizabeth's siblings moved on to Georgia about the time her parents went to North Carolina. A note I made in 1963 at the library at Mississippi State University says a William Redman died in 1805 or 1806. He had a son Benjamin and a daughter May (or Mary), who married Thomas Dobbins. These people lived in Georgia. I don't know where I found that. It was in some genealogy magazine. I have never found any more about those people. "The History of Butts County, Georgia," in a brief article by a Ms McMichaels, probably a descendant of Benjamin Redman, says that according to family tradition Benjamin Redman was originally from the area around Edgefield, South Carolina, where his family was active in the Revolution. Ms McMichaels reported a number of dates of birth and death and several marriages, all supposedly taken from the Redman family bible. I have seen this information presented in other places, where there are several differences. The earliest record we have of Benjamin Redman is that he was listed in "GA Military Records 1794-1815" as a private in Regiment M of the first company (Capt. John Foster's company) on March 27, 1793. This company was from Columbia County. The next record is his marriage in Columbia County on 05 November 1797. There is an 1820 Census record (p. 235) for a Benjamin Redman in Richmond County, GA. If it is our Benjamin, it is garbled. It lists one male and one female 18-26 years old and one male 10-16. If we presume that Benjamin himself was left out, the two males would be right for William Redman and his brother George W., but the female is too young for their mother. This may be a different Benjamin Redman. Five slaves were enumerated. Our Benjamin would have been 47, his wife Elizabeth 51, the boys 22 and 14. An 1820 Census record for a William Redman in Columbia County, GA, shows two m. 16-26 no f. two slaves one free colored m. Why are there no more children?
