      In his 1777 Will, John Carter names his wife's 3 Sisters, [Mortons] and his wife as Jeane ]sic Janie], and names his two daughters Elizabeth and Frances. He also names his 3 brothers, Thomas, James and Robert Carter. He apoints William Morton, guardian to daughter Frances and his brother Thomas Carter as guardian to Elizabeth.

The will of Jno Carter dec'd, having directed that the executors shall divide the slaves and other estate into equal parts between the widow and children, to wit, Frances and Elizabeth Carter, in conformity thereto, we have divided the slaves as follows. To the widow, now the wife of Claiborne Barksdale -a Negro man named Nat, a Negro woman named Ciller, a Negro boy named James, a Negro girl named Lyddia; she is to be paid 30 £ to make up her equal part. To Francis and Elizabeth, to be equally divided between them when they marry or come of age -a woman slave Fanny, a man slave Bob, a man slave Harry, a man slave Jasper, a boy slave Robin, a boy slave Ben, a boy slave Billey, a girl slave Milley, a boy slave Frank; to pay the widow 30 £.       p.186, 19 November 1745, I Giles Carter...son William Carter a Negro Girl called Nann and a Dutch Spinning Wheel...son Giles the upper part of a parcel of land, a Negro boy called Jemmy and a Negro girl called Moll...three sheep and my gun...son John the residue of my Land and a Negro boy called George & a Negro Girl called Bess likewise a bed & furniture...my Grand daughter Mary Garrard a Negroe girl called Jenny the sd Negro girl to be in the care of my Son John until the sd Mary Garrard be Married...but if the sd Mary dies before she arrives to Capacity to enjoy it, then sd Negro to be valued & the value to be equally divided between my three sons.       Claiborne moved to Charlotte just after his home was broken up by the death of his first wife in order to have the assistance of his relatives in taking care of his 5 small children. After he married the widow Carter in 1778 [Jane Woodson Carter (nee Morton)]

      Claiborne Barksdale was a soldier of the Revolution, serving in the Charlotte County Militia which saw considerable active service in several campaigns.

      After the Revolution, Claiborne Barksdale settled down to a planter's life in Charlotte Co. and became a very prominent and prosperous man. He also conducted a mercantile business. His 1816 Will names his wife Jane Barksdale (nee Morton), and his children as Agnes M. Whitlock, Clabourn Barksdale and Mary Goode [is she married to a Goode in her mother's family?], Lucy Tate, Sarah Collier, Susannah Crenshaw, Grief Barksdale, William Barksdale.
