John Carter (Joseph, Thomas, Thomas), born 8 Jun 1725, died after 1793 in Orange Co., 4 Jan 1771, John Carter had a deed from his mother, Catharine Carter, for her dower in 215 acres of land where his father, Joseph Carter, dec'd, had lived. 24 Apr 1780, Joseph Rogers of Culpeper, sold to John Carter, Gent. of Spotsylvania, 188 acres and improvements in Orange County, to which he removed his family, as in the census of 1782, John Carter, of Orange, was the head of a family of sixteen whites and thirty servants.
