      Obituary
On Sept. 17, 1910, the spirit of Bro. S. J. Carter took its flight from this world of sin and sorrow and pain and soared away to mansions of eternal bliss. He was 49 years of age and had been a member of the Baptist church for many years, having been converted at an early age. He was also a member of the Masonic fraternity having joined it nine years ago.
Bro. Carter entered the ministry at about 20 years of age. He spent a year at Louisville, Ky. At the seminary and it might be well said that he was useful in this work, for many where he preached date there conviction and conversion to his influence. He also took great interest in missionary work, being employed by the board at the time of his death.
Bro. Carter also stood high in the fraternity, his membership being with the lodge at Fairmount, Ga. He leaves a wife and eight children to mourn his loss. He will be missed in the home, the church and the fraternity, but may each be able to say: "Not my will, but thine be done."
He was followed to his last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives.

Obituary of Rev. S. J. Carter
Member and pastor of Bethlehem Church, who died Sept. 17, 1910.
We feel that in his death, we have lost a worthy member, a faithful servant as pastor, and devoted minister of the Gospel of Christ. When we read the admonition of Paul, to Timothy ii 2-15 Verses. We had a beautiful picture of our pastor in his last years months, and days on down as long as his health admit of it. And when we consider the wonderful growth power, and attainment of Bro. Carter in his memberial work we can better realize, and understand the importance of the admonition given to Timothy by Paul. When he said, "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the words of truth." It seems that he had no higher aspiration or desire than winning souls evidencing the sentiment of the poet that said, "Shall I be content with one star in my crown." When Heaven's bright portal I see the answer comes back strive a cluster to win, and the way will be brighter for this.
It seemed that his last days were his brightest and most consecrated days to service God.
We feel sad to give him up but feel assured that while his body sleeps in old Bethlehem churchyard that his immortal spirit is basking in the son-shine of God's love.
      Therefore be it resolved:
1st That we bow in submission to him who doeth all things after the council of his own will.
2nd That a copy of resolutions be spread on our church book, a copy given to the breaved family and a copy to the Calhoun Times for publication.

Stonewall Jackson Carter was my Great-Grandfather. James Jackson Carter was my Grandfather and his son, Ewell, was my Father. They were in Whitfield, Gordon, and Floyd counties. Mary Clement Yes, we must be! My Dad did not know much about his family. His Dad, James Jackson, lost his Mother, Amanda Miller, when he was about 8 years old. His Dad, Stonewall Jackson, married again and had another family. My Dad did not know his Father's half siblings. Therefore I grew up not knowing much about his family. Anything you can share with me about James J. Carter (1822-1910) would be much appreciated.
Mary Clement So, your Grandmother was Stonewall Jackson's half-sister.
Donald AndNancy Pinnell Yes. They also had Annie Carter- born 1876 married Thomas Gaston and a Gazaway, and James Robert "Bud" Carter born 1881. On one census I found he had a daughter Laura?
Donald AndNancy Pinnell James J Carter lived in Sugar Valley, Gordon Co. Ga in 1880 census. Laura was older. They have Stonewall listed as Jackson A. Carter. It wasn't until I got my DNA that I found he was my grandmothers 1/2 brother.
      Mary Clement
Mary Clement I have not had mine done but my brother and I plan to. I have a question for you and then, I will leave you alone for now. Stonewall died when he was 49 years old. My Dad's sister and brother died young, one with a heart attack and the other with a stroke. The rest of the siblings died with circulatory diseases as well. Was this prevalent in your family? When you had your DNA done, did you find out whether our Carters came from England?
His Mother, Amanda Miller died when he was about 8 years old.
