    • John was born in about 1640 in England and died in about 1700 in Virginia. John came to VA from England in the 1660's. He was a tobacco planter on the York River, York Co, VA, and owned "Oak Hill Plantation" in York Co, VA. He received land from the King of England as a "headright". {"headright" normally meant a new immigrant}

      John married Hannah (Ford) in about 1665 in York Co, VA.
      Their 2 children:
      1) John Oakes III
      2) Charles Oakes, Sr.

      John was a neighbor of Michael Sparke of Newgate, VA, and Thomas Stegg, Jr., who was elected 1st Speaker of VA House of Burgesses in March, 1643. The Speaker was the presiding officer of the House of Burgesses during the period in which VA was a colony of Great Britain.

      Records show John owned land in Norfolk, VA, on November 18, 1670.
