The only items specific to the topic of the children of Ellen RIGNEY and Benjamin Turner CLEMENT in the letters written by F.B. CLEMENT that I have photocopies of are -
"It would interest me if you care to relate the whole story of his life with your grandmother as well as with Sallie Gravelly." "It has always seemed to me that he did the Rigney children an injustice and a wrong in abandoning them without support." 19 Nov 1948

"The Kodak picture enclosed of Rob, Albert and Ben reveal some similarity of features to my father." 9 March 1950

The only other family members mentioned in the letters to Estelle POWELL from F. B. CLEMENT are Aunt Tavia, Uncle Fletcher, and an Aunt Betsy Goggin

The photocopies of these letters were sent to me by James
      A. Davidson, a grandson of Albert Sidney RIGNEY.

      These letters are addressed to:
      Mrs. S. C. Powell
      Chatham, VA
      The letters begin: Dear Estelle
These letters contain details that indicate that indeed
Benjamin Turner CLEMENT did father children by Ellen RIGNEY.
This Benjamin Turner CLEMENT was the son of George
Washington CLEMENT (1786 VA - 1867 VA) and Sarah 'Sally' TURNER (1804 VA - 1889 VA).
The F. B. CLEMENT is Fletcher Blaine CLEMENT (b. 1892 AR),
son of Benjamin Turner CLEMENT and Alice B. Williams (d. 1910 AR).
Estelle POWELL was born Estelle RIGNEY (b. 1906 VA), the
daughter of Albert Sidney RIGNEY (1867 VA - 1949 VA) who was the son of Ellen RIGNEY.
If you have additional information on the families of any
of these people, please do share it with the members of this group. Thank you.
      Sincerely,
      Marna
Eleanor Sidney Rigney is described at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/i/g/Lloyd-M-Rig

Gibson in 1864 and had children Benjamin, Albert, Mary Ellen, Samuel, Harris and Robert.... Ida, James H. and Madison Monroe are born before 1880 census and presumed to be children of Levi Monroe Jackson.
Eleanor 'Ellen' Sidney Rigney was also associated with an attorney, Benjamin Clement, for some time; reportedly, he gave her a house, servants, and other considerations, but not marriage and withdrew his support, remarried elsewhere and sired a son, whom he sent to William & Mary (per JD) This story is a combination of the facts told by J.D. and internet cite of Sharon Gibson Martin, a native of Pittsylvania Co., VA
    • Dates of Birth and death from her headstone in Callands, Pittsylvania Co. Marriage Certificate gives her name as Eleanor but she generally was called "Ellen". Certificate also gives her mother's name as Sallie Rigney and leaves blank the name of the father. She gave her age as 46 when actually it should have been 50. He gave his as 40, when it should have been 44.

Death: 1904 in Briar Mountian Pittsylvania CO, VA Note:
      Yvonne,
Eleanor Sidney Rigney was my GGreat-grandmother too! My great grandfather was Robert's brother James Hunter Rigney.
I have some family letters also. They are from F.B. Clement, Benjamin F. Clement's son by his second "marriage". He was an attorney in Nashvilee, Arkansas. The letters are dated 1949-1950 and sent to Mrs. G.C. Powell (Estelle Rigney). She is the daughter of Robert and James brother, Albert. On the second page of one of his letters it says "he did the Rigney children an injustice and a wrong in abandoning them without support. What are their feelings toward him?" I am missing the 1st page to that one, but I have 3 others complete. Ellen and Benjamin never got married, but had 13 children. Ellen married Levi Monroe Jackson October 4, 1894 and the last 4 of her children took his name.
      Ellen and Ben's children:
      William Johnson Rigney, b. March 8, 1863
      Benjamin Lee Rigney, b. March 14, 1866
Albert Sidney Rigney, July 13, 1867
      Mary Ellen Rigney, b. April 9, 1868
Samuel Harris Rigney, b. abt 1870

      James Hunter Rigney, b. Dec 13, 1878
Madison Monroe Rigney, b. August 1879
      Minnie G. Rigney, b. July 1882
      Lula M. Rigney, b. Jan 1884
      Anne Rigney, b. May 1885
I also have a letter to Mr. James R. Huntsman of Stillwater, Minn. dated 1978, from Madalene Vaden Fitzgerald. She is doing some family research for him. I don't know who he is. She had a note given to her by Mrs. Maude Carter Clement, Historian, and wife of the late Senator Nathaniel E. Clement. It told her about how 3 of Benjamin Clement's brothers were killed in a feud. There isn't much else in it except she said she would look for marriage record for Ellen and Benjamin.
Ellen is probably daughter to Sally Lolly Adkins that married Owen Rigney. She then took on the Rigney name. I haven't had time to search the Adkins link. Maybe someone out there can give you and I some help with the connection.
      Hope this helps.

      My Ellen? is as follows:
Eleanor Sidney (Ellen) Rigney; b. abt 1844, d. about 1904.
      Mother: Sarah (Sallie) Adkins
      Father: Owen Rigney
Ellen had 11 children by Benjamin Turner Clemet, but never married him. She named all of her children Rigney. I have my Grandmother's marriage certificate and it gives no name for her father. I believe that all the birth certificates do not have a father's name. She married Levi Monroe Jackson 10/4/1894. Her children are as follows:
      William Johnson Rigney; b. 3/8/1863, d. 6/17/1932.
      Benjamin Lee Rigney; b. 3/14/1866, d. 6/8/1956.

      Harry Richard (Whale) Rigney; b. 3/13/1874; d. 11/10/1948
Ida Belle Rigney; b. 1875; d. 5/15/1964. THIS IS MY GRANDMOTHER.
James Hunter Rigney; b. abt 1877, d. unknown.
      Madison Monroe Rigney; b. 8/1879, d. unknown
Eleanor Sidney "Ellen" Rigney was born in 1844 and died in 1904. She is my great-great grandmother. Her son, Harry Richard "Whale" Rigney, was my great grandfather. I have two different photos of her. Ellen's parents were Owen Rigney and Sally Adkins Rigney. Ellen was born and lived in the Briar Mountain section of Pittsylvania County all of her life. Nine of her children were by Benjamin Turner Clement. She later married Levi Monroe Jackson. There were five children by this marriage. Her tombstone reads "Ellen J. Rigney Born 1844 Died 1904.

      Hi,
      Interesting, from my notes,
My great grandfather Willis Griffin Rigney was married to 1st wife, Elizabeth Hedricks in Pittsylivana County,VA.
Her parents were John Hedricks and Susan Midkiff. I noticed " Midkiff" so I recalled that a Rebecca Rigney, daugther of Jonathan Rigney SR or JR married Spencer Midkiff. Do you have any info about Rigney/Hedricks/Midkiff families ? I hope that this will lead to the parentage of John Rigney (m. Anna Adkins) John Rigney was grandfather of Willis Griffin Rigney thru his son, William(m. Mary " Polly" Gibson)
      **
According to her entry in the 1900 census, Ellen had 13 children; the first nine went by Rigney and the last four by Jackson. Ellen married Levi Monroe Jackson in 1894 and in the 1900 census, the last four children (Mattison [Madison], b. 1879 or 1880, Minnie G., b. Jul 1882, Lula M., b. Jan 1884, and Anne, b. May 1885) were listed as Levi Monroe Jackson's STEP children. Descendants of the children who went by Rigney insist that she had a long-term relationship with Benjamin Turner Clement who later in life moved to Nashville, Arkansas, where he married and had one son. However, he frequently returned to Pittsylvania county to visit his sister who lived near Ellen Rigney.
Although Ellen went by Rigney, in the 1850 census she is listed in the household of Owen Rigney, wife Sally Rigney, son John Rigney, l year old. Also in the household were Ellen ADKINS, age 9, and Susanna ADKINS, age 7 -- suggesting that these two girls were the children of Sally, but NOT Owen. When Ellen married in 1894 her mother was given as Sallie Rigney; no father was listed.

Madison M. who went by Jackson married Lousetta Wells in 1910. They lived in Mountain Valley, Henry Co.
In the 1850 census Owen Rigney's household showed Sally and a 9-year-old girl names Ellen Adkins. I'm beginning to think that this Ellen is the one who became Ellen Rigney. She may have been a daughter or a sister of the Sally Lolley Adkins who married Owen Rigby.
      Again, my thanks.

      Dear Kenneth,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding Julie Rigney, d/o Elleanor Sidney Rigney. Exhaustive research of this family reveals Julia as a daughter of Ellen Rigney. Her name: Eleanor Sidney Rigney is found on two photographs of her, contributed by her descendants. She was known as Ellen, we believe it a nickname for Eleanor.

The errors on the death certificate of the names of her parents are also found on the death certificates of others of her children. The DC of her son James Hunter Rigney lists his parents as Mary Ellen Rigney and James Rigney.

Many errors are found on Death Certificates, even in my own family. We believe the erroneous names on the death certificates are because these children knew they were illigement and it was somewhat a stigma in those days. The fact that Julia does not appear on the 1880 census, can mean she was in another HH with her families which are shown in successive order on that Census. We do not find a Richard that qualifies as her father. I will remove this record upon receipt of any further documentation you can provide, in order to prove your assertions.

Much of this research was by Jodi Davis before her death.
      Kindest regards,
      Mary Frances Eggleston (nee Reynolds)
We find no record for Elvira Gibson or Richard Rigney, to date, 2022
