Josiah Cowles was a son of Calvin Cowles and his wife Miriam Atwater, of Wolcott, Connecticut. He was twice married, first to Deborah Sandford, of Merien, Connecticut in 1815, and second to Nancy Caroline Carson, the widow Duvall, in North Carolina in 1828.
There were four children born of the first marriage: Eliza Ann Cowles (30 April 1817), Elvira Deborah Cowles (18 Jan. 1819), Calvin Josiah [Carson] Cowles (6 Jan. 1821, born in NC), Abel Sanford Cowles (1 Oct. 1824).
There were seven children born of the second marriage: Josiah Cowles, Jr. (17 Dec. 1829), Andrew Carson Cowles (12 Jan. 1833), Miles Melmouth Cowles (16 April 1835, CSA soldier), Lewis William Cowles (3 Dec. 1837), William Henry Harrison Cowles (22 April 1840), Henry Clay Cowles (17 June 1842) and Caroline Mary "Carrie" Cowles (9 Oct. 1845-20 March 1913, m. Captain M. M. Teague, CSA)

Sandford_0009 9th 4th Abel Sanford Lafayett son of Josiah Cowles was a physician died with consumption when a young man. Amos B. Sanford son of Abel T. [???] was born in Woodbridge New Haven Co. Conn from thence moved to Iredell Co. N.C. and there married Catherine Johnson. Had three child- _dren Laura C., James Abel, & William H. Laura C. Sanford married Reuben Reynolds living at the time in Mocksville Davie Co. had two children Margaret Catharine and Hugh Sanford. After the death of his wife which occurred soon after the birth of their son; he removed to his native [???] Co Ind. and settled in Statesville where his daughter Margaret C. Reynolds was married to Andrew C. Cowles of Hamptonville, Yadkin Co. N.C. (son of
Sandford_0010 10th Josiah Cowles [second family] Had three children 1st Carrie Belle Cowles who died at Statesville. F. College in her graduating year. 2nd Reuben Reynolds Cowles. 3rd Hugh Reynolds Cowles. Neither of whom are married. Hugh Sanford Reynolds died in infan- _cy. James Abel, son of Amos B. Sanford was killed by the falling of a tree, when a mere boy. Wm. H. also son of Amos B. Sanford Was wounded at the capture of Newburn N.C. 14th March 1862 from the effects of which he died 15th June following. Was Capt. Commissary of 7th N. Carolina Infantry. Amos B. Sanford was married a second time to Mrs. Griffi__ [??] had one son Calvin Cowles G_ [???] he married Mary Brown. They live in Mocksville, Davie co. Do not know How many children they have.
